This beach is a favorite of locals (us) and visitors. The sand is fine and the view is spectacular. The beach is rarely crowded; HOWEVER, please observe the warning signs and do not venture into the ocean. Not even up to your ankles. The rip current here is a killer - literally. Too often there have been tragic losses at... More

It's a very small beach, but it's beautiful! Your dog must remain leashed, but you'll want to keep them leashed due to the proximity to the highway and the dangerous water conditions. Even so, it was perfect! I took my pup there twice. Once we had it to ourselves. The other time there were only 3 other people. The best... More

My husband and I stopped by Monastery Beach during our drive down South on Highway 1. The beach is covered with small pebbles! Great beach! I hate sand in my car! Great place to have lunch and relax!!

Whatever you do, don't swim here. People die every year from the strong undertow. Have a glass of wine at sunset but don't get near the water ... the warning signs are not a joke. Better beach experiences can be had at Carmel, River or Garrapata beaches.

There is no finer way to know you are an experienced SCUBA diver than to be forced to do the "Monastary Crawl" as you exit the pounding surf after a dive. The beach adjoins the Monterey Submarine Canyon, and in a hundred meter swim, you can be in 100 foot + of water. The sandy bottom turns into gouged basaltic... More

Often overlooked because it is so near Highway 1, this place is worth a visit. There are plenty of signs which also warn you to not go into the water AT ALL. I would not even wade in it... Nonetheless, it is a place of beauty. THe waves are very strong and the risk of undertow and entrapment very great,... More

We rented a home for a week for the Big Sur Marathon this past April and the home was right next to Monastery Beach! This place is spectacular. We have heard of several deaths in the water on Monastery Beach so be careful! The water and undertow are treacherous. Don't go into water would be our suggestion.

Many tourists are fooled by the calmness of the water--over the years there have been too many people pulled out. Be sure to enjoy the lovely beach high on the sand, but don't venture close to the water. Marvel at the brilliant blues of the water on a sunny day.

Numerous out of town SCUBA divers get pulled out of these waters and all too often taken away by the Coroner. I've dove in these waters and know first hand how dangerous it can be. Find another location if this is your "open water dive" for your certification. It's not an easy diver and certainly not for a novice diver.

There are so many beaches to see in the Monterey area, this is one of my favorites.
