Many tourists are fooled by the calmness of the water--over the years there have been too many people pulled out. Be sure to enjoy the lovely beach high on the sand, but don't venture close to the water. Marvel at the brilliant blues of the water on a sunny day.

Numerous out of town SCUBA divers get pulled out of these waters and all too often taken away by the Coroner. I've dove in these waters and know first hand how dangerous it can be. Find another location if this is your "open water dive" for your certification. It's not an easy diver and certainly not for a novice diver.

There are so many beaches to see in the Monterey area, this is one of my favorites.

Named for the Monastery across Highway 1, this is a lovely stretch of sand. Caution ... use care when entering the water, since it is also a treacherous ocean experience should one venture too far out.

I love coming back here a lot. There are countless things to do and see, crowds can be a bit shoulder to shoulder sometimes but it's worth it. Shopping, eating, attractions, aquarium, outdoor markets and more.

This is a great place to just relax for a while. The views are amazing with Pebble Beach on one side, Point Lobos on the other, and a (punnily enough, Carmelite!) monastery on the hillside behind you. The water, as is normal around here is freezing, and the beach is also known as "mortuary beach" because people die in its... More

A great beach for a picnic or sunbathing. Stay out of the water though it has a very bad undertow.

Surf can be dangerous, but shell are abundant and the views are great.

I live in the area so know the beaches well. NOT a beach to take dogs, huge undertow. But great for people walks!

Great little beach if you're not interested in going into the water (hazardous conditions). You can usually see seals or sea lions in the water just off shore, and it's perfect for kite flying or just sitting and watching the waves. You can see the beach from Hwy 1 - in fact, you can just park on the shoulder of... More
