Loved the walk! There is a 250+ year old cherry tree to see on the way. There are small shops along the way for refreshments and these also have toilets.

This trail is 8kms long and a stunning option if you are lucky enough to visit the Kiso valley.
You can start at several places but we started in Magome, a small post town on the trail which originally had 64 such towns. Magome itself is worth some time before you start, some nice shops, very beautiful scenery and a...

We have hiked better, more interesting trails. Scenery-wise, the start of the climb from Magome offers panoramic views. Aside from that, most of the walk is through the forest. But if you are there during the autumn leaf season, the walk is stunning.
One of my highlights during my trip to Japan - the kiso valley trail. Not a common tourist attraction to the general population as even my japanese friend who lives in tokyo hasnt heard of the towns.
Stunning, untouched towns, traditional. Dont forget to take a night time stroll - (even though it was freezing) - the quietness of the...

We walk parts of the Nakasendo Trail. The trail is well signed and gives you a new view of japan and the people living in the country side. For us was the trail completely different way to see japan and meet people. Especially interesting were the Torji pass between Yabuhara and Narai as well as the part between Tsumago and...

OK I know it seems obvious. But that day we took the train to Tsumago to drop off our luggage at our Ryokan, then took the local bus back to Magome in order to walk back to Tsumago (which is easier than walking from Tsumago to Magome). And it was raining lightly that day. But it was our only chance...

we liked the climbing, the nature, the woods and our meeting with Mr. Suzuki who offered us a drink during our walk. Be aware that you need good walking shoes
This is a great little hike, less than 8km through cedar forest with intermittent villages along the way. The trail has apparently existed for centuries and has been used by Samurai, monks, merchants etc and the post towns of Magome and Tsumago provided them with an opportunity to stock up on food, drink etc. I took the train from Nagoya,...

One of the highlights of our Japan trip. This is an old post town, with old wooden building and tourist shops. It is very scenic, and the surrounding mountains are beautiful. We went early in the morning, about 8am, just as everything was opening up but before all the tourist buses arrived. There is not a whole lot to do...

Takayama is another quaint town that is more easily accessible from Tokyo, but if you have the time, it’s worth making the trip out to Tsumago and Magome. We walked the trail, which was scenic in terms of nature, but disappointing since we thought we would see old buildings along the way. If you are going to Tsumago and Magome...
