We came here to learn about the wine that beat out the French wine in 1976 and put Napa on the map. Grounds are beautiful. Lake with ducks and swans. Nice views of distant hills. There are a few steps to climb or a ramp if needed. Wine tasting was inexpensive. Cool vine candelabras on their back tables.

Booked our only tour of wine country here, because of the history and reputation. Joel was our tour guide, and he was great. During the tour, you stop and get another pour, while he talks about the vast history of the place, including the 1976 French tasting. The grounds of the winery were very beautiful - you will get some... More

I have taken a paid tour and private wine tasting in the past and cannot say enough good things about this winery and especially how welcome our hostess Katy, made us feel. She is an absolute ray of sunshine and is so knowledgeable about the mines were were sampling and the history of the Chateau and the area. We even... More

Lovely setting - nice wine tasting experience (but, they do sort of shuffle you in and out). Lovely pond to walk around. Wine tasting was well done - knowledgeable person. A bit too loud (so many tables and tastings going on at once. But yes, I would recommend! This little winery is the one that beat out the French wines... More

A great wine tasting experience. We had reservations and didn't have to wait at all. A very knowledgeable and friendly young man hosted our tasting and did a great job. He patiently answered all our questions and gave us a great tour. The 1976 history is a great perspective - and it was good to hear about the truth vs.... More

Want to have a pure taste of what the American winners of the 1976 French wine competition are doing today? Visit the beautiful Chateau Montelena (winner in the chardonnay category) and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars' (winner of the red category) newly opened tasting center. Montelena has beautiful grounds and wine to match. Give yourself time to stroll the grounds.

My friend and I visited while it was down pouring outside. They were very busy but still managed to help everyone enjoy tastings. We had the pleasure of having Sean do our tasting he was wonderful and very knowledgeable in the wines and history of the the Chateau. I was very impressed. This place is beautiful even on a rainy... Chateau Monetlena is a must see when you are in the Napa Valley and Calistoga. It is one of the truly unique vineyards with it's story, gardens and delightful wines. Our taste pourer was Jon R. and he is excellent. We had a nice little tour and enjoyed walking the garden and pond area even on a rainy day. The... More

My husband and I visited this winery on February 10, 2015. This winery has some beautiful grounds with an Asian influence of a moat, bridges and a pavilion. The outdoor area is scenic and pleasant to walk around. The wine tasting room is inside a castle carved into a hillside at the bottom of Mt. St. Helena. We tasted about... More

I was looking forward to a tour of the winery, chateau, or cellar, but it was really just a tasting room. The history was impressive, and the "bottle shock" story was great.
