My husband and I spent two days of our Japan honeymoon on Yakushima island, and we're so glad we did. We booked our ferry, the Shiratani hike and an island tour with YES Yakushima, extremely nice, helpful folks who made our trip extremely easy and memorable. The island is beautiful and truly unique, and was a wonderful dichotomy to our... More

We rented the car and booked our lodging though YES Yakushima. Easy and efficient service. Very nice people. We loved where we stayed at (cottage Views Koshima): quiet, very nice views, and lovely place. Highlander recommended. As for Yakushima We loved the place and stayed 4 days (hiking and beach)

We spent four nights in Yakushima as part of a longer vacation in Japan, having read that it was a good spot for hiking and such. And was it ever! It’s a mountainous island surrounded by beaches, covered in ancient forests, and sprinkled with rivers for swimming, shower climbing and kayaking. It even has a special seashore onsen (hot spring),... More

I was fortunate enough to be placed in Yakushima to teach English for a year. I never expected how magical the island would really be. You know that you're going to a pretty amazing place when one of it's fun facts is, "there are more monkeys and deer than people!" The beaches, nature, mom and pop restaurants, island culture and... Just back from 3 days on Yakushima as part of our Kyushu holiday. It was amazing - covered in forests, hotsprings and waterfalls, we saw deer and monkeys everywhere. With a lot of the info in Japanese, we booked everything through the YES Yakushima website in English - they made it really easy to book accommodation, ferry from Kagoshima, car... More

I just got back from Japan this month, and I spent about 1 and a half days in Yakushima. No, this isn't enough time to fully enjoy the island, but I still wouldn't pass even a short time there. What I saw: Shiratani Unsuikyo--don't miss this place! It was absolutely amazing. I'm pretty sure I just walked around with my... More

Hiking is superb on this island but be warned I can rain very heavily for more than a day. The hike along the old railway is slipperly and not so fun in the rain. And come prepared.

The National Park on the volcanic island of Yakushima is the perfect location for my last day in Japan. The Natural Recreation Forest or Shiratani Unsuikyo is situated 800 meters (2625 ft) above sea level. The primal forest of Yakusugi Cedar groves covers an area of 424 hectares (1048 acres). Peering through the thicket of ancient trees, and alone in... More

If you have no interest in nature, its doesn't matter. I just go there without interest in this island, but I fall in love with a beautiful seeing. Every people in this small island is so so kind. Thank you.
