Yakushima has a natural World Heritage listed temperate forest, with ancient specimens of Japanese cedar trees. We were blessed with a lovely sunny day, spent walking in the Yakusugi Land nature park. We saw ancient cedar trees, one reputed to be more than 3000 years old. Bridges over rivers, boardwalk trails, monkeys and deer, as well as beautiful waterfalls. A... More

This island reminds me of slow paced holidays I took as a child about 50 years ago. We wee greatly alarmed when we asked the minshuku owner where the restaurants were and she sucked in her breath before saying chotto...however there are actually a lot of places to eat in Miyanoura where we stayed as well as in Ambo. The... More

Our tour to the beautiful Yakushima island is the crown jewel of our Kyushu vacation. Yakushima island tour introduced us to the historical, cultural and natural aspects of the island. Visited some local speciality merchants (e.g. wood carvings, local delicacies, green tea farm and products, fish/seafood market, 100 Yen agriculture produce, etc), impressive waterfalls, beach hot spring (something unique), mystical... My husband and I spent two days of our Japan honeymoon on Yakushima island, and we're so glad we did. We booked our ferry, the Shiratani hike and an island tour with YES Yakushima, extremely nice, helpful folks who made our trip extremely easy and memorable. The island is beautiful and truly unique, and was a wonderful dichotomy to our... More

We rented the car and booked our lodging though YES Yakushima. Easy and efficient service. Very nice people. We loved where we stayed at (cottage Views Koshima): quiet, very nice views, and lovely place. Highlander recommended. As for Yakushima We loved the place and stayed 4 days (hiking and beach)

We spent four nights in Yakushima as part of a longer vacation in Japan, having read that it was a good spot for hiking and such. And was it ever! It’s a mountainous island surrounded by beaches, covered in ancient forests, and sprinkled with rivers for swimming, shower climbing and kayaking. It even has a special seashore onsen (hot spring),... More

I was fortunate enough to be placed in Yakushima to teach English for a year. I never expected how magical the island would really be. You know that you're going to a pretty amazing place when one of it's fun facts is, "there are more monkeys and deer than people!" The beaches, nature, mom and pop restaurants, island culture and... Just back from 3 days on Yakushima as part of our Kyushu holiday. It was amazing - covered in forests, hotsprings and waterfalls, we saw deer and monkeys everywhere. With a lot of the info in Japanese, we booked everything through the YES Yakushima website in English - they made it really easy to book accommodation, ferry from Kagoshima, car... More
