This was a huge highlight of my trip to Japan. It's a small island south of Kyushu, There are two ways to arrive in Yakushima, either by ferry from Kagoshima; cost is about $90.00 and takes under three hours or by plane from Kagoshima, Fukuoka or Osaka. We flew to Osaka, Itami airport, which was less than 2 hours but... More

I cannot put into words how hard I fell for this island. The mountains, beaches and wild life makes everything so surreal. Renting a car is the best way to get around the island, and visiting this island during winter (December) is a great time as there are not many people and hiking up mountains get a bit easier as... Such a lovely place to relax and explore. Comfortable ferry trip from Kagoshima, with great views of the volcano and other islands en route, then to sleepy little port Anbo. The road goes all the way round the island, with a section between 9.00 and 11.00 that is part of the National Park and subject to certain restrictions, but you... More

simply unbelievable nature! I have traveled tons and never seen a place like this, it looks more like "lord of the rings" type of forest then a real location. It is not the cheapest location and choice of accommodation is limited but so worth it! renting a car is a must!

This unique sub tropical island is a rarity noted by UNESCO World Heritage Nature designation. Great Oceans, beaches and hiking in the mountains with 7000 year old trees covered in moss. Many great hikes, educational centres (museums) wonderful for adults and children.

Yakushima was the main scope of my travel to Japan, this year 2015. I had read a lot on the island on the Web, since many years, and really Yakushima was even more special than expected. The weather was wonderful (3 sunny days out of 4, around the middle of July), the atmosphere relaxed, the forests and mountains incredible, the... More

Yakushima has a natural World Heritage listed temperate forest, with ancient specimens of Japanese cedar trees. We were blessed with a lovely sunny day, spent walking in the Yakusugi Land nature park. We saw ancient cedar trees, one reputed to be more than 3000 years old. Bridges over rivers, boardwalk trails, monkeys and deer, as well as beautiful waterfalls. A... More

This island reminds me of slow paced holidays I took as a child about 50 years ago. We wee greatly alarmed when we asked the minshuku owner where the restaurants were and she sucked in her breath before saying chotto...however there are actually a lot of places to eat in Miyanoura where we stayed as well as in Ambo. The... More
