I was fortunate enough to be placed in Yakushima to teach English for a year. I never expected how magical the island would really be. You know that you're going to a pretty amazing place when one of it's fun facts is, "there are more monkeys and deer than people!" The beaches, nature, mom and pop restaurants, island culture and... Just back from 3 days on Yakushima as part of our Kyushu holiday. It was amazing - covered in forests, hotsprings and waterfalls, we saw deer and monkeys everywhere. With a lot of the info in Japanese, we booked everything through the YES Yakushima website in English - they made it really easy to book accommodation, ferry from Kagoshima, car... More

I just got back from Japan this month, and I spent about 1 and a half days in Yakushima. No, this isn't enough time to fully enjoy the island, but I still wouldn't pass even a short time there. What I saw: Shiratani Unsuikyo--don't miss this place! It was absolutely amazing. I'm pretty sure I just walked around with my... More

Hiking is superb on this island but be warned I can rain very heavily for more than a day. The hike along the old railway is slipperly and not so fun in the rain. And come prepared.

The National Park on the volcanic island of Yakushima is the perfect location for my last day in Japan. The Natural Recreation Forest or Shiratani Unsuikyo is situated 800 meters (2625 ft) above sea level. The primal forest of Yakusugi Cedar groves covers an area of 424 hectares (1048 acres). Peering through the thicket of ancient trees, and alone in... More

Yakushima is a beautiful lush Island with a lot of scenery and variety, with mountains, beaches, forest and wild life. It is not the easiest Island to get around on though, and not the typical backpacker place where you easily can meet other travellers to team up with. If you want to go hiking, do listen do all the guide... More

..and hire a car and driver to get you around the island, as the public transportation is very infrequent, or even non-existent to many places. Your hotel can arrange it for you (or you can ask a taxi driver directly --- there are at least 60 taxis on the island, and most will be happy to have the work..). Recommend... More

In Yakushima island you can enjoy mountain trekking in over 1000 meter mountainside in morning time. Then in afternoon on same day, you can enjoy beach activities in very clear water on white sand beach! Can you believe it? The island is amazing! A nice hotel has a impressive pool, because the water of pool is fresh water wiout any... More
