It's awe-inspiring to know that the rock paintings/scratchings at Bhimbetka are 9,000 years old. It fills in many blanks in the history of the subcontinent. Something must have inspired the ancient inhabitants. Could it be the abundance of mahua trees in the area?

Bhimbhekta is about 1hr drive from Bhopal. There are cave-like shelters with pre-historic paintings by cavemen. Different levels of drawing show the evolution of cavemen - from hunter-gatherer stage to group hunting and domesticating animals. It is absolutely amazing!

We spend a lot of money on tour guides at historical place. This was an example of money wasted. Please look up wiki/google before you go here. There are no facilities at the site so carry your own food and water. It is however not too hard to walk around the site. I would say that the viewing area is... More

When you are at a place which is inhabited in 10000 BCE, getting awed is simply the only thing you will manage. Time stands still over here. Though there are many rock shelters which were inhabited by the mesolithic man, only 15 have been opened for the masses. At first glance you will miss many of the paintings that the... More

Nowhere else in the world can you get so close to Stone Age Art in situ. And the landscape is breathtaking. Have wanted to see this for years and finally did. I really like this place.

A great place you will need the whole day at if you are interested in this sort of stuff. There are some 750 points of interest at Bhimbetka of which some 450 have now been catalogued and are available for tourists to visit. The paintings here date from 30,000 BCE apparently all the way to the 1300s. So don't get... More

A visit to the rock shelters of Bhimbetka approx. 50kms from Bhopal is a very enlightening and rewarding experience. The paintings in red and white (some show yellow and green colors too) of human forms, animals, birds, trees, flowers etc and these are from the Paleolithic/Mesolithic age more than 10,000 years ago and are a proof of early human life.... Located about 50 kms from Bhopal, Bhimbetka is a unique attraction. The place is well maintained by MP Govt. and is definitely worth a visit. The rock shelters and cave paintings and well preserved and are over 10,000 years old. There are more than a dozen rock shelters which are clearly marked along a walkway which is about 1.5kms in... The Bhimbetka rock shelters are an archaeological site of the Paleolithic, exhibiting the earliest traces of human life on the Indian subcontinent, and thus the beginning of the South Asian Stone Age. It is located in the Raisen District in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, near Abdullaganj town and inside the Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary. At least some of the... More
