The castle can be seen for miles aroud and dominates the local wild and remote area. It is in a ruinous state but is quite exciting to explore though you need to take care as there are some precipitous drops. In the summer months it is hot but out of season it can be a remarkably cold place to visit.... More

The ones who visited Kerak may find Shobak less attracting. But for me it is just a bit different. Both has its own charm and both has something to show you. But Shobak is free of charge to visit and much less crowded. Shobak has two secret stairways: one is around 365 steps down and leads to the old well... More

We almost gave this a miss but were really happy we didn't - impressive ruins on a hill of a crusader castle - take a torch and explore alone underground tunnels and ruins. What is more it is free. More

You get asked to sign a visitors book as you go in. You are free to roam or there are guides there for you if you wish to hire one. We were warned not to climb in some places as the masonry is unstable. We really enjoyed the incredible views and there are some fabulous vantage points to look at... More

Close to Petra this impregnable looking fortress sitting on a conical hill looks out over the wide expanse of the desert the three must castles in Jordan are Ajlun, Karak and Shobak. More
