SUMMARY: I am a US expat in Mex and have been here for 2 years. I have done some of the popular gringo places (Riviera Maya), but prefer the out of the way places like this. Tolantongo is truly a unique place. I read that Tolantongo is owned and operated by a collective of families that live in nearby towns.... more

Well, I recently visited Grutas de Tolantongo, the place is amazing, the warm water river is beautiful and the scenery makes this an unforgettable place. Unfortunately there was something that bummed me out a lot, the people there. Mexican people are known for their hospitality, but this is the exception. The Grutas De Tolantongo is an amazing place to visit. It is in a deep canyon near San Cristobal, Hidalgo. A river of warm, blue water comes out of a large cave. There are cascades and swimming pools higher up on the mountain. The rooms were $40 (400 pesos) a night and there was a wonderful view of the river... more

I wanted to take my 5 year old daughter and my boy of 2 years to a river but not to any river, a river with hot water so I found Tolantongo. On Tolantongo Caves, a river of hot water born. You can go inside the cave which is like a steam and feel how the warm flowing water makes... more
