During a two-week trip through Transylvania in Romania, we arrived in Harman village. Transylvania is home to hundreds of towns and fortified churches built between the 13th and 15th century by Saxons. It is a haven of architectural heritage. Just walking through the high surrounding concentric walls and climbing the towers, it is not difficult to imagine that hundreds of... More

Old Transylvania Saxon Villages are a real treasure of Romania. A past that remind us of the great saxon heritage. No wonder that Prince of Wales fall in love with this amazing place of Romania. Brasov - Sighisoara - Sibiu represents a triangle full of Saxon villages with fortified churches and fortresses. Viscri, Malancrav, Saschiz, Floresti, Mesendorf, Bunesti or Crit... More

We saw several fortified churches in Transylvania. When visiting the castle-church of Heltau/Cisnadie we got a tour guide, who gave detailed information about the castle church. Apparently this fortified structure gave great security to few families (around 150) in the area. The church still has a Sunday service and also occasional concerts. When we climbed the tower of the church... More

Transylvania has very interesting and beautiful villages, wonderful forests, cute houses with interesting windows. I visited 10 countries until now. But Romania (especially Transylvania) is my favorite. If you visit Romania, you don't stay in Bucaresti only, but also you should go to Transylvania. Because it is not similar to Bucaresti or any other city. Rent a car (or by... More

An extensive area to visit with multiple Saxon villages and fortifies churches to visit. There are a couple of events you can attend, but you must go to one of the brunches they organize every last weekend of the month (in the summer time) - you will meet a lot of people and eat great food. Some places are to... More

Viscri is a small village, in Brasov county, which can be reached if you travel from Brasov towards Sighisoara, on the E60 European road - 7km from the European road. This village, as many others in this region in Romania, was inhabited by german-routed people, who gradually, after the 1989 revolution, fleed the village and returned to Germany. Most of... More

There are some 150 village with fortified churches and I've seen quite a few of them, the whole region is wonderful and the churches give it a medieval feel. Besides the most visited one at Biertan, Saschiz and Viscri there are few other which are worth a visit: Hosman, Valea Viilor, Cristian nearby Sibiu, Calnic, Harman. In the region there... More

If you arrive somehow in Transylvania, in Sighisoara area - I strongly recommend that you visit a couple of saxon fortified churches such as: Malancrav, Biertan, Atel, Viscri or Saschiz. In Transylvania there are over 160 such churches, each one very beautiful and interesting, maybe not all of them in very good shape nowadays. At Malancrav - the church has... More

Our trip was actually in June 2009 but I can't select a date earlier than 2010. We rented a car and visited three fortified churches; of the seven UNESCO -designated fortified churches, Prejmer was the only one we saw. The fortification at Prejmer is really interesting and the staff gave us additional information and suggested we walk the wall perimeter... More

We found an excellent tour guide through the visitor's center at Sighisoara and drove to Malancrav, Biertan and Richis. Malancrav was my favorite. As we approached Malancrav we drove carefully through geese who crowded the tiny roads. We were greeted by two women chopping firewood. It was chilly for October. There was a spent fire still smoking up on the... More
