It would be enriching to schedule a visit to Hatyai with a follow-up visit to Songkhla town Both cities have their unique features and complement each other in their differences. Hatyai appears to me more commercialised with more shopping complexes, eateries and entertainment outlets. Songkhla boasts of natural beaches, lakes facing the Gulf of Thailand and great monuments. After my... More

Yep. It's a statue. Of a topless mermaid. On a beach. Plenty of photographers are around, so expect to wait a few minutes for your turn in line. Like most bronze statues, it shines where it's touched the most, so know you're not the first one to reach for one of her perky breasts. Be careful climbing to her -... More

There's a myth when we touch the mermaid statue, you will be back to Songkhla again someday. Despite the myth, the view of the Samila Beach is breathtaking.

This is one of teh things you MUST do when in Songkhla, one can't come back from holiday from Songkhla and NOT have a picture of the Songkhla Mermaid.

It's not that magnificent nor not that great. It is just a bronze mermaid statue situated in rocky shore of Samila Beach. It represents the province of Songkhla and legend says that when on touches the breast of the mermaid, you'll be back again to Songkhla province, so that is why one should not miss this place, unless you don't... Not a great piece of art, but a must stop is you tread all the way over to Songkhla! This statue from the 1960s has become the symbol for the city and for the province; no one will even believe that you were here if you don't have a picture of her to post on FB! ;-) Many restaurants along... More

The mermaid has nothing spectacular in herself, the best to see is the wonderful large and long part of beach, where the statue is located, by the way this place is an evening "rendez vous" mostly for youngster need to be left alone, with romantic beach and path to stroll around, few restaurant with lousy food, large esplanade with no...
