I went to the Ijen Crater and started climbing at 2.30 AM. At first it was a easy climb, after 1 km... it gets tough. I climb a lot of mountains so I'm reasonably fit, but make sure you are in a healthy condition. WEAR A FACE MASK. I can't stress that enough. The sulfur really bothered my respiration system.... I'm not sure how to begin to describe this experience, I guess the title sums it all up for me. More than the magical illusionary vision of the blue flames the one image that will remain vivid in my mind for a very long time is of my first encounter with a local miner making the arduous climb out of... Getting up at midnight was a bit of a stretch, but we stayed north Banyuwangi at the Watu Dodol Hotel, so there was extra time needed for the drive. For a shorter drive, you can stay in one of the dumpy lodges on the Bondowoso side. We engaged a guide through the hotel. Niza had good English, reasonable knowledge and... More

Warning! if you do the 1am tour and the winds turn the wrong way, you can and will be trapped in a cloud of choking gas. For our group, 3 of us LOST OUR MINDS. You can't see, you can't breath, and between the rocks and people, there is no escape. They equate this sight to the pits of hell... More

to climb a 3km path way to Kawah Ijen, just to see teh magnificent God's wonder of "Blue Fire" - which felt like climbing forever ! - was difficult, for my 5 year old son, my self even for my husband... we started to climb from 2am all the way up and reach the crater at 4pm... the view was... More

We set off at 1 am from Banyuwangi and was in the crater by around 4 am. The climb up isn't too bad, lots of people stopping for rests so no need to worry about that. The climb down is a little more difficult- quite slippy so wear sport trainers and not flip flops like we originally planned on doing.... More

We started the slog up the trail at 7 am and its initial steepness left me rather breathless, not so the sulphurminers who are always in for a picture (one or two kretek cigarettes or cookies are expected in return). What awaited me at the end after the second part of the trail left me breathless once again. This time... More

This is something not to be missed, even if it was not very annonced two years ago... The road was terrible to get there, but thanks to our driver, everything was fine. And once, there, wow! Nothing can compare in the world! The crater lake is a deep turquoise blue, and the workers at the mine are incredibly strong, carrying... More

The hike up can get hot, but it's well-worth the amazing colours and view of the crater lake at the top. And the miners performing back-breaking work whom you see on the way (as well as in the crater) make the experience fascinating. Bring layers, as the weather at the top can get windy (and you'll want something to cover... More
