The towering stone houses Dzimba dzamabwe were home of 2000 shona speaking people that prospered between 12th and 15th centuries and its 270 hectares in size. That's where the beautiful stylish fish eagle was found i.e, the Zimbabwe bird on the national flag. The country was later on named Zimbabwe derived from the ruins.Every structure was built using a dry stone technquie- entirely without mortar-involving millions of stones, each one supporting another. « less

We were on a mission holding crusades and had some free time one morning and decided to visit the Great Zimbabwe Ruins. Excellent guide, nice pace, informative and fun, but I am a history major... More

it was a mixture of everything, it took us a cool 16 days starting in Harare , Mutare and then our main destination Great Zimbabwe Ruins, nice sunset , and sunrise , it was all good and we were on a budget , after which we went to Bulawayo into Hwange and Victoria Falls. We camped throughout our whole trip... More

We spent a morning at Great Zimbabwe this month and found it more enjoyable than we expected. The site is just about 20 minutes from Masvingo, which is about 3.5 hours from Harare. We camped on Lake Kyle at the recreation area on the other side of the lake from Great Zim, so it took us about an hour to... More

The structures show how the Zimbabwean people were talented in building without using the mortar. there are also traditional dancers and some assistants who explain how the structures... More

Most important historical site in southern Africa. If you visit Zimbabwe, this has to be on your programme. Take a guide (very reasonable price, you buy a voucher when you pay your entry fee) to understand the various parts of the site. The presentation in the museum is a bit dull, but the artefacts (bird statues, one of them is... More

There are dozens of ancient stone ruins from Zimbabwe's pre-colonial past, making it one of Africa's most compelling historical destinations. Yet Great Zimbabwe is by far the most impressive and beautiful of these, rating as easily Southern Africa's foremost historical attraction. Set outside the sleepy country town of Masvingo, Great Zimbabwe consists of two main parts- 'The Acropolis', which occupies... More
