We visited the castle to be followed by the gardens, but we had our three collies with us and when we arrived at the castle we discovered we couldn't take the boat over to the castle as dogs were not allowed. We walked to the ferry (just over 1/2 mile) We saw the castle from a couple of different viewpoints.... More

Stunning gardens, we are NT members in England and it was lovely to be able to use our membership in Scotland too. We came upon this by chance and I didn't want to leave. A must do if you are in the area ,you don't have to be into gardening to enjoy this place, great for kids too

A brief stop-off on the Dumfries and Galloway tour and a pleasant couple of hours wandering around various gardens with flowers I've never seen or heard of. Very relaxing indeed and topped off with a nice coffee. What could be better on a nice summer's day?

We visited this garden as National Trust members and had pre-booked a scooter, which had been brought to reception in readiness for our arrival. An interesting and varied garden, with a large walled garden, which was very well maintained. There was a lovely view from a vantage point in the sculpture garden. The rhododendrons were still in full bloom and... More

This is a lovely series of small gardens, all around a central area with a big house and large rhododendron beds. We enjoyed the bird-watching lookout (we saw a woodpecker - not bad for 'townies'!), the walks, the café, and the lovely staff who'd kept my camera safe - I left it in the tea room - until we returned... We have visited this garden whenever we have been in South West Scotland and we always find something new to see. This year there were some new sculptures and a new pond. Also visited the restaurant and had a lovely cheese scone mid morning and jacket potatoe and salad for lunch. Nicely presented and value for money. Well worth a... More

If you like rhododendrons and azaleas this is the place to visit at this time of year. Also loved the rest of the gardens too with the many different beds. So lots of ideas to take home with you.
