Ran out of steam

On the 23rd of August we were booked on the Pembroke coast express in premier class. As we live in west wales we have seen the train come down a few times and always say we should go on but always look at the cost and decide not this time, last year my brother persuaded us to go. A week... More

This was a very disappointing experience - we had booked a day out on the Royal Duchy steam train. Now, we understand old trains can be temperamental - but the service given to passengers should not be. It was 'inconvenient' that the toilet did not flush - but when the engine failed, they seemed to think it was fine to... More

My wife and I treated ourselves to the premier dining ticket. We paid extra so we could both have a window seat, which I would recommend if you are travelling as a pair. The food and drink were excellent and plentiful. The staff were cheerful and efficient. The only surprise was that the evening meal did not come with a... More

Like other comments here, we booked Premier Class with full dining for the Pembroke Coast Express 23rd August but were greatly disappointed. After two emails asking about the steam to be used, we were told that "Tangmere" would replace "King Edward" as it was not yet out of the workshop. Tangmere had also failed (see other comments) earlier in the... More

Everything was great, the staff, the food, the service, was great. My only gripe, and in which was beyond the control of the company is that we were not steam hauled all the way, this was due t restrictions imposed to the company by the government (Fire season restrictions or something like that). Overall it is damn fine experience, and... More

This is the email my wife received from The Rail Touring Company after booking my 60th birthday present We have great pleasure in confirming that we will be steam hauled from London Paddington to Bishops Lydeard and return by 60009 'Union of South Africa'. The section from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead and return will be hauled by one of the... More

We went on the West Somerset Steam Express from Paddington to Minehead on Saturday 22nd August. When we arrived at Paddington we boarded the train and found our seats. A cheery call of ‘No steam today!’ from a member of staff was the first we heard of the problem. Not the best way to find out that you’re not going... More

We went on The Royal Duchy trip to Cornwall where the steam train failed us at Newton Abbot and we waited for 2 and a half hours. So we had the steam engine for less than half the journey. We were kept informed but we did wonder how many train journeys actually make it as others told us it had... More

Working with trains that are almost 80 years old there are going to be times when problems occur. It's how you deal with those problems that will make or break an experience. We were on the Royal Duchy Train to Cornwall when the steam train failed at Newton Abbot. The staff on board kept us informed every step of the... More
