Rent a car and set yourself free in this area. There are picturesque landscapes in every direction. We were here in the spring so we didn't have any problems with the famous flies that swarm the lake in the summer. We took hikes, visited the fascinating Kafla volcano area, and went to the Myvatn thermal baths... which were absolutely sublime....

We didn't even really SEE the lake, since it was 100% frozen over, but even then it was stunningly beautiful, although you wouldnt want to stop there for a long period of time, we just drove around it on our way around the ring road! Totally different experience to the summer i think! But as ever in Iceland, every view...

This was a lovely area and it was directly across the road from our Hotel. Lovely walking. The pseudo craters were interesting too.
Don't think I would fancy all the midges in the summer as the name translates to Midge lake.

It wasn't until later in the day we discovered the Krafla Volcano and the hikes there- we were only in the area one day and although Lake Myvatn was nice- we regretted spending so much time there and didn't have enough...

My wife and I made our way around the entire island while we were in Iceland and stopped at Lake Myvatn on our way through the north. It was a really beautiful lake, but I don't know that I would recommend coming through the north unless you just have a TON of time in the country. It was a lot...

The Myvatn area is beaultiful.
But the flies kill it all.
To reduce the annoying impact come prepared with "head nets".
Trust me without some protection it is unbearable.

If you are in Akureyri and not sure if you want to make the drive her, I recommend you do!
Here are some of the great things to do at the lake;
1) Go to the nature baths, just as good if not better than the Blue Lagoons
2) Take a horseback riding session with a farmer on the southside...
