Dettifoss & the smaller Selfoss, just upstream, are located about 25km's north of the Ring Road on either the brutally unpaved #864 (closed due to winter conditions about 1 km from The Ring, thankfully!) or the newly paved and smooth #862 just a bit west. Dettifoss is impressive and fairly high with a big volume of water cascading over, and... More

I was unsure about going as it seemed like it would be very difficult to get to but they had cleared the road so it was smooth tarmac all the way there (though there was still a fair amount of snow and ice in the car park but I managed to get through it with my 2 wheel drive). There... More

Touted as the most powerful waterfall in Iceland, Dettifoss can be viewed from either the east or the west bank. We made a driving loop up to Ásbyrgi connecting F864 and F862 to appreciate Dettifoss on both banks. Embrace for a bumpy drive A shorter walk upstream brings us to the beautiful Selfoss. More

Dettifoss requires a 10-minute, steep walk down into the canyon to see these huge, thundering falls that drop 144-feet. It is about another 1.5 km trail to the Selfoss waterfall (about 3 miles roundtrip from the parking area); at least half of it was through a rough boulder field that rose and fell along the side of the river. Pretty... More

There are several waterfalls as you get to the main one. Definitely worth the (really small) detour if you're doing the A1 around Iceland. Just before Mytvarn. Loved it. Beautiful water colours. More

The day we went to see the waterfall, Hollywood was filming on the site and the entire surrounding was sealed off for tourists. However, we did get the chance to visit the dettifoss the next day. It was simply amazing. More

There was quite a lot of snow which made for a tricky drive out to the falls but it was well worth it. An easy trek to the falls prob about 20 mins. Just us and a group of others from our Hotel on a Jeep tour which was nice as we had it to ourselves! More

It is one of those things that you have to see when driving the ring road, but I was not particularly awe-struck. It's a big waterfall (or actually more than 1), and its mist makes you very wet - which might be fun on a sunny day, but we visited Dettifoss on a dreary day, and could have done without... More

Dettifoss is off the beaten track, but is worth the detour at any time of year. The violence of the falls is awe-inspiring, and we were able to get dangerously close to the torrent. It was a wild day with 35 knot winds, so it was quite an experience with flying lava grit and the spray. The access road from... More

There is now a paved road to dettifoss starting off Rte 1 near Myvatn. few people there and relatively easy to walk to. but the drive to Asbyrgi is still a dirt unimproved road but not impossible if you drive carefully More
