This riparian oasis is a relaxing opportunity to be outdoors on partially shaded pathways during Arizona’s hot summer months. It’s popular year-round with birders and photographers. This was my first visit; I'd like to return during the wetter winter months to compare the scenery. Nature Conservancy volunteers host the visitor center ($5 admission) which features informative botanical and wildlife displays.... More

Stop and tour the Visitors' Center to learn about the history of this place, then take a walk on any of the trails to see vermillion flycatchers, ducks, foxes, hummingbirds...it's quite remarkable.

We saw a javelin near the lookout point, a red fox with a rabbit in its mouth on the Willow trail, 2 sets of mating Western Tanagers, and lots of Vermillion flycatchers. Wheelchairs would have a tough time. Tom Horton, docent was not that helpful regarding fowl and fauna. $5 per person was well worth this excellent adventure. Bring your... More

The Hassayampa River Preserve is very beautiful, tranquil, and peaceful. Volunteers and employees are friendly and informed. There is a ton of history at the Preserve. Check it out! Admission fee is very small.

This preserve was beautiful and lush in the middle of dry desert. It was fascinating to see, with beautiful songbirds and butterflies, flowers and plants. A lovely break from the unrelenting sun and sparse vegetation surrounding it.

A recent visit to this Nature Conservancy property produced decent, although not outstanding, birding. We had read a recent review from about three weeks earlier describing a fantastic variety and numbers of each species, but there were only limits on both accounts. Still, we had some decent sightings, and as can be the case with any birding outing, you get... More

We have friends that live in Surprise and on a recent visit they took us here. I was pleasantly surprised by how neat this was. The trails were manageable (we had an infant and 4 year old with us) and the trees and wildlife were neat to see. We took a picnic and ate it in the picnic area. Wasn't... More

What a great delight. The trails were mostly easy and we enjoyed seeing the birds and critters of the area. We did go to the top of the lookout and it was a bit of a challenge but doable for anyone with the interest. The helpers were great and full of information. It was a delightful way to spend a... I visit the Hassayampa river preserve every year - never disappointed. The hikes around the preserve are not difficult, and tge one around Palm Lake is wheelchair accesible. Make the effort to climb up Lyke's Lookout - the views are extraordinary. Visit at different times of the year, as the preserve is so different depending on the time of the... More

I've wanted to visit this Nature Conservancy preserve since the 80s. I was not disappointed. The visitor center has lots of useful information plus helpful staff and volunteers. The trails are well marked and varied and the riparian zone and wildflowers were outstanding. This special place should be on every nature lover's list; and, you can also access the Hassyampa...
