We LOVE going "Over the mountain!"

My husband and I enjoy Garden Canyon, and my six year old grandson likes it even more. He calls it "going over the mountain," because when he was younger, every nearby nature trip we took involved driving up mountains, and the paved road to Garden Canyon has a few dips and washes, so he would throw his arms in the... Hike up the old road to ancient petroglyphs thru the surrounding trees. When hiking, always bring a snack and plenty of water.

Garden Canyon east trail is stunning great vista of Sierra Vista and the desert beyond. Trail was a little challenging to me but the 4 and 6 year olds were like mountain goats. After a 30 to 40 minute hike we had a picnic overlooking the US and Mexico.

You need to do some homework before going. It is not a place that caters to tourist trade, even though you may be able to access it. Other than some restrooms and picnic areas, it is undeveloped. You may pass active small arms firing ranges on your drive up. Don't go hiking across them... Each season has different critters, birds... More

We started at park area where there is an information bulletin, crossed stream, went straight, right at T, up hill until path merged left and back down. Total mileage was 2.43 with elevation gain of 813 ft, and took a leisure hour to do it. Came back the next day at same park, crossed creek, went left at T, followed... More

I don't understand most of these reviews - they must be written by spoiled, lazy Americans that don't want to get out of their car and walk. First of all, this area is truly meant for the military and their families but it is currently open to the public - it is not a national or state park, thus the... More

A 30 minute drive along range road. This site is located away from the bright city lights and distractions. Constellations are easily visible here at night. Quite beautiful! During the daytime, this scenic area is a dream for young explorers. The area is great for novice hikers too. Small play area for kids with gazebo and picnic tables. Facilities available... More

This canyon is on Fort Huachaca. There are no signs to direct you there…so, it is hunt, drive, hunt, drive. We asked a woman walker…she didn't know. We drove more..finally, using our nav. system we located it. Gets a bit rough near the top, but our Ford Edge made it just fine. We saw flycatchers, woodpeckers, summer tanagers. We heard... More

My hubby & I are birders so we rented an SUV since we knew that the Garden Canyon road is not in the best shape. Well worth the extra expense. The views are great and there is a really nice picnic area at the top (end). And the birding is great!
