We rented a off road dune buggy type vehicle and drove up the road, it was such a fun experience! For sure worth it as you go up and take in all the different "layers" of the hill. And once at the top view is amazing! Make sure you go all the way to the vista.

We took ATV's to the top and once there you can look across to most of the red rock mesas in the Sedona area. It is very beautiful, but this road is subject to instability in the monsoon seasons and small amounts of rain can make the road a more difficult to navigate for novices and it can be narrower... The views from this road are excellent. The road condition is terrible, tough to navigate on a custom off road jeep. We went with Pink Jeep and the tour was excellent. The road shows up on GPS and Google maps, but unless you have a durable 4 wheel vehicle with off road experience don't try it on your own. Our... More

We decided to try our luck last month on my birthday. From the reviews, I thought I might be OK in our RAV4. MISTAKE! The views were great, but if I go back, it'll be on an ATV at LEAST (we encountered a number of those, as well as Jeeps). We bottomed several times, and my wife thought the rocks... More

This is a great elevated spot to see West Sedona and the magnificent rock formations of Capital Butte, Thunder Mountain, CoffeePot Rock, the Mittens and the Sphinx. There are many other rock formations visible as well. This overlook gets very busy around sunset. The red rock color is deepened by "Magic Time" around the sunset hour. Just realize that the... High clearance vehicle required. This road heads out of Sedona from the SR179. The road starts off as a paved road, however, quickly turns to an unpaved, pot-holed, rutted dirt road ... and believe me it is rough! It seemed as if it hadn't been graded in a while as some of the pot-holes were deep and made for a... More

The road is not well maintained. There are signs that warn "high clearance vehicles only", but we saw a couple outbacks, a PT Cruiser and a Nissan Sentra (!) try to make the trip. This road has several 8-10 inch steps, ruts and rocks that a vehicle must go over. I wouldn't take anything that isn't a 4x4 just in... More

We went to this road through pink jeep tour. It was very bumpy two hours trip. The tour guide was describing the history and geological nature of the hills. The day was clear and the view was awesome. Overall it was a nice experience.

Very fun drive. We had a Jeep Compass and it was fine. Only a couple of challenging spots on the road. Takes about 2 hours but so worth it. You can take it from Sedona to I-17 or the other way, too. We love going off-road and this was a very nice one with great views.

I keep reading that it's possible to drive up this road in a standard passenger car if you're careful. DON'T TRY IT! Though a 4WD drive vehicle may not be necessary, high ground clearance is. One of my favorite hikes in the Sedona area involves hiking up this road as far as I feel like going, then finding my way... More
