The museum's collection includes items that reflect the art and culture of the region, from the Paleolithic Age through the present day. Exhibits are displayed in wall niches and arranged chronologically. I was particularly impressed with the Ucagizli cave display show how the early humans in this region lived 45,000 years ago ! Hatay has a rich collection of mosaics dating back to the Roman era in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. They have been found in the ancient cities of Daphne, Seleucia, Pieria (Samandağ), Antioch and Tarsus. The most famous figures among those depicted by the mosaics are the drunken Dionysos, Orpheus, Dancers, Ariadne abandoned from Defne (Yakto). Column capitals, a sacrificial altar, a cult image, a bas-relief, a fresco and statues date from the Hittites to Roman periods. Excavations have been carried out at ruins such as Guneyde, Dehep, Catalhoyuk, Tainat, Al Mina, Ac-ana, Defne-Harbiye and so on.

The newly built museum is no longer at the Gunduz Street. The collection has been taken to a larger building at Antakya Reyhanli Yolu (Antakya Reyhanli Street). Busses with number 15 go to the new Hatay Museum. Get off at Iskur stop. You will see the it. The price for the bus is 1,75.

I had been to the old museum many years ago. Now they have moved to a beautiful new setting. It is much larger, and there is so much to see! They have done a very nice job with the new setting, and more is to come. We were told there are still thousands of items still to be displayed! You could spend a lot of time here, or just a couple of hours, depending on how much you want to read and see. We were pressed for time, so didn't stay as long as we might have.

The Antakya Archaeological Museum is new and bright and a great museum. They have many great objects on display from Paleolithic to Islamic periods. The highlight of the collections are the mosaics mostly Roman. They stand out as some of the finest I have ever seen. They are also displayed very well. More importantly the museum does a great job of placing these objects in a historical perspective and using them to tell the story of Hatay. Obviously, most of the interpretation is in Turkish but there is more than adequate presentation in English. The only complaints I have are that a couple of videos could have been subtitled in English and I would have liked to have seen more on the Islamic Period.

This museum has a very large collection of mosaics. The collection from the ancient cities of the region is very interesting as well. The museum is renewed and the new building is modern and pleasant to walk around. It is 5 km out of the city not far.
