We had a very interesting tour by Manfred. Having met Mandela on three occasions he was able to intersperse factual information with personal anecdotes. Interesting tour of the Mandela cottage where he was held on house arrest and an interesting drive through the rest of the prison which is situated in Paarl ringed by the Boland mountains. Well worth a... More

Cristo, our guide brought us to see this place & the statue of Nelson Mandela where he spent the last 18 months of his imprisonment before he began his Long Walk to Freedom. It is so beautiful all around the prison & the prison itself is not a terrible place. Very simple looking. For those interested in the history of... More

The entrance to the prison houses the statute of Mr Nelson Mandela from where he started his Long walk to freedom. Well worth a visit.

This is worthwhile a visit to see this grande man's statue on this famous entrance. Pity one could make more out of it, but visit it when you are in the area.

We were truly blessed to be given access to many areas of the prison property. We toured the Youth Centre, and met a group of inmates - they had the chance to tell us their stories, which was incredible. We also were taken back to the Madiba house and received a 2 hour tour of the house, complete with extensive... More

Today, on the news of Mr Mandelas death, comes a poignant memory of a 2011 visit to Mr Mandelas last home before his release. There was talk of opening the home to the public at the time. Just being in the same home where he wrote, sat, ate and slept was amazing. As was the dining table where he held... More

Set between the beautiful Boland Mountains, the prison leaves a bitter sweet taste in your mouth. Here where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated and finally released in 1990, set the stage for one of the biggest historic moments in our time.

The Drakenstein Correctional Centre, a low-security prison, near Franschhoek is the prison that Nelson Mandela spent the last three years of the 27 years he spent in prison. Outside the gates of the prison there is a very moving statue of Mandela. The statue represents Mandela's final walk & his jubilation as he left prison. On the day of his... More

This is still what is was when Nelson Mandela was finally freed from encarceration for 27 years in 1990: a prison. In front of the gates is a modest statue of the former president himself with his signature pose, one fist in the air as he did when he was released. Although not an official visiting site, the prison warden... More
