The mother of the stammoeder of the Combrink familiy spent many years in this lodge. Her name was Armosyn de cleijne van De Kaap. Her mother was probably the slave woman Isabella van Angola and the farther Cornelis Claasd, a Dutchman. Armosyn had a duaghter named Magdeld from the official butcher of Van Der Stel. The butcher was a Swiss... More

An amazing place. A hidden gem. A must visit should you wish to truly understand the history of South Africa, and especially the 'makeup' of Cape Town, Mother City, together with its cultural diversity. A place where you can feel connected, home. Where you realise how lucky and blessed we are to have what is today. When you realise it... More

On the whole I would agree with the previous reviewer who commented that this museum seemed a little muddled. The displays on slavery are, of course, moving and quite interesting, but don't quite seem to cohere in a way that fully works. There is an audio-visual presentation which I found difficult to hear, and there were no subtitles. However some... More

This was worth a visit, but we felt that the museum was a little muddled. There should be a leaflet to guide you through the building and explain the history a bit more logically than we found. And what does a collection of toys of the first floor have to do with slavery in cape town. More

The South African Museum was established in 1825 by Lord Charles Somerset and is one of the oldest institutes of its kind in South Africa. It is also one of the biggest attractions for tourists in Cape Town; more than 400 000 visitors pass through its doors annually. The museum offers an educational experience for everyone, with collections including fossils... More

Much information in a beautiful building. When we were there, there was an exposition about Steve Biko. Very good, it's always about Mandela, but he also was a very important black person. More

This museum was quite memorable. The main focus is to recount the slave trade and its role in Cape Town history. The museum is housed at the same site the the original Dutch slave lodge was located, giving it a bit of historical resonance. One learns about the expansive nature of the slave trade and how they were brought from... More

A must see while in Cape Town! After seeing the natural beauty of the area, the wineries and then a trip to Robben Island this just puts everything into perspective. I agree that it will have great significance for Americans, it is amazing to see the parallels between the two countries. Give yourself plenty of time to walk, read and... More

I visited the slave lodge after learning about this little known part of South African history in a lecture. All I can say is that this museum is a must see while in Capetown. If you are from the States, there is a riveting and moving comparison about the Jim Crow South that is not to be missed! If you... More
