Seeing a million people crammed into corrugated metal shacks, with a few fortunate ones chosen for the new multi-storied apartment buildings, is evidence of how stupid & cruel apartheid separation policies actually were. I felt uncomfortable walking around the shacks -- like these people were on display for curious tourists. But, I came away more informed & also more concerned... More

great guide who explained about why township was started and community spirit of place, visited actual homes and talked to entrepreneurs who had started small businesses to improve their lives and lives of others in township, people who had so little achieving a better life with good ideas and hard work. Impressed by recycling to make beautiful craft items and... More

The tour we went on took us to an arts project and various levels of housing but stopped short of the "shanty town" area. We had a most interesting guide who was resident in the area. We saw dreadful poverty but we also saw happy well nourished children and proud and dignified residents grasping the opportunities available to them to... More

I don't quite know what I was expecting of a 'Township' ! The reality was an absorbing experience where we were warmly welcomed and proudly told about how this community is evolving/progressing. Great news for sure...but there is still a chasm between the 'Haves' and 'Have Nots' - arguably an overused cliche but when you have a privileged glimpse into... More

My hostel The Backpack, a wonderful budget accommodation in Capetown, organized a half-day township tour for me through Imivuyo Touring. The four of us were picked up at the hostel and off we went to the Langa Township. On the way our guide explained a lot of interesting facts about the importance of township tours for the townships and life... More

Langa Township in Cape Town is changing with modern houses fully equiped with solar panels for generating electricity. The new block of houses appears so attractive. the township is being provided with social amenities too. However, the facelifting of Langa township is too slow....

Went on a township tour of Cape Town's oldest township (community). I traveled here after visiting the District Six Museum and my guide was very insightful and plugged in with the community so as to make this township visit unique. Although Cape Town is such a beautiful city there are still issues that linger from the dark past of apartheid.... More

Took a tour with a former resident from Langa. Really enjoyed to see how the commutinity has progressed and how they still live there. Really enjoyed visiting the commutinity center and even a visit to the medicine man. A must see that puts things in perspective and makes you be more than grateful.

There is pride and community there that you would not expect. Poor does not mean lack of character. It means not a lot of stuff.

This is something you do only once. All they care about is really for you to leave money and you can rather just buy a book and read about the place at home and you will have learned more.
