We did a personal tour with ProteamSA. It was an amazing experience to see how people live first hand in the townships and to learn more about apartheid. MC the tour guide grew up in the townships and has first hand experience. I would highly recommend anyone add this to there trip... I think it is important to see the... More

I highly recommend the tour of Townships with Thabang Titoti from Ezizwe Tours. I was unsure about going as was concerned if this might be construed by the residents as voyeurism of sorts. Thabang (and others) provided reassurance that people in the townships appreciate the interest of travellers to see where and how most of the city's residents live. It... More

I am from Cape Town and I have NEVER set foot in any kind of township. It's dangerous and just plain stupid if you think it's a good idea to enter an impoverished community and leave unscathed. Sure, you might be lucky but consider the risk before you go where even the cops will not!

Very eye opening to visit the township & community center. However, in visiting the township, noticed many individuals have smiles on their faces and do not focus on their predictiment. I just realized the blessings I have.

I well remember the Apartheid in S.A. so was very interesting having the histories of the removals from the city out to the townships of the blacks/coloureds explained. But what I don't understand is 50 years on, why still these living conditions?

I had a tour by a local young man. He showed us around in Langa, the oldest Township in Cape Town. He showed us how people live there, we went in different houses and shacks, into actual homes where people live in. A township beer tasting was included. It was an experience, but I don't have to drink it again...... More

We did visit the Langa Township on an organized tour. It was with mixed feelings we went on this tour. On one side it is a part of South Africa one somehow need to see and experience to understand this country, on the other side, we had a bad feeling participating in this industry showing poor people to tourists. We... More

Seeing the contrast of the rich and the poor helps to keep me grounded. Our work is never over to help those in need. It is amazing how resilient people are! Amongst so little, people still have smiles on their faces, and children are playing, running, and excited about school! I have out bibles that day, and folks were running... More

A must see. We had a private tour of Langa by someone who had lived there. I wasn't sure what to expect and was surprised to find people living in such conditions as they had been displaced from another area. It makes one grateful that we don't have to live there. To find people preparing dead 'sheep' to sell was... More

It is a must see, however for the tourist I would suggest go with a tour group or arrange to go with locals you know in Cape Town. It is a very different experience, be sure to "be prepared" and alert during your trip.
