The tours were very well organized when you got off the boat at Robben Island. We were fortunate to learn about the prison, as well as how the prison was run by a former inmate! It was incredible to hear their stories and get a first hand account of what they went through during their stay. We toured some of... More

The tour itself was very interesting and we learned a lot. Our guide on the bus - Kent - was a good balance between serious and entertaining. Our prison guide was also quite interesting and it was good to hear first had experience of being a prisoner on the island. I did think the stop at the shop was a... More

Simply a must do for everyone visiting Cape Town due to its historical importance. On the island, you are taken along on a bus tour; subsequently you are guided inside the actual prison buildings by a former political prisoner. A touching experience.

I booked the tour with Cape Town tourism guys who had a counter at the conference centre- convention centre. They took extra effort to book me the trip on the day I wanted. Thanks for it. I really enjoyed the trip. Our guide eas an ex-political prisoner who did a very good job. It was very moving. The lady who... More

Very well done -- the way the tours are organized is well done. You are on a large ferry, but then a smaller bus and you keep to the tour. Extremely informative and I loved how some of the former prisoners are there to talk with you. It is an important perspective for everyone to understand more about Mandela and... More

We enjoyed our tour to Robben Island as an introduction to understanding more about Nelson Mandela and apartheid. Our guide, a former inmate, was very passionate and knowledgeable but very difficult to understand. We were herded into buses when we arrived at the island - but the group sizes were too big to be able to easily hear and see... More

The Pros: Historic significance, your former inmate tour guide who will share his personal story and show you where he bunked, played soccer, ate, etc., physically seeing the prison and environs. Hearing about the notable inmates and of course about Nelson Mandela. The Cons: You are herded in large numbers onto the ferries, onto buses, into the prison and given... More

This was an incredible experience! Our guide was informative and very interesting. Of course the highlight was Nelson Mandela's prison cell, but I found the rest of the tour just as interesting! At each stop on the tour before you get to the prison, a tour guide tells interesting stories and facts about the place. The island is also beautiful... More

For 300 ZAR/person I was pretty disappointed with the quality of the guides and history on this tour. It really didn't get into the magnitude of the history of the island offering small tidbits here and there. While I thought it was really unique and interesting to have an ex-political prisoner giving the tour of the actual prison, I found... More
