I am a South African who has been twice to Robben Island. The first time by myself, the second with my children, who were young teenagers at the time, and I felt they needed to see for themselves. This is an Incredible lesson in history. I was extremely moved by it. It really made the feeling of apartheid and what... More

I found this an amazing lesson in the history of apartheid and the political prisoners held on Robben Island. Our guide through the prison itself was held as a prisoner on the island for 7 years. Good value for money including the 45 minute boat trip each way.

Our guests booked a trip to Robben Island, they are a Family with 3 children, first of all when they got there to the appointed time the trip had been cancelled due to some problems with the boat. The guest came all the way from Yzerfontein to take this trip, could one not have sent n SMS to inform the... More

This is an important site and could be so good, but it is very badly organised and run. We learned more about Robben Island from the recent film “Goodbye Bafana”, about the relationship between Mandela and one of his jailers. If you want to go, either book online or turn up early at the ticket office and be prepared to... More

Only reached by boat, the tour of Robben Island is a historical journey to a time when South Africa did not give freedom or equality to all its citizens. Usually, a former prisoner is the tour guide, which gives a personal feel to the horrors of what happened there. It can be very hot there in summer. So, it is... More

This is a must if in Cape Town. A nice boat ride to see the unfortunate home of a South African Icon! Robben Island prison, the home of Nelson Mandela for most of the 27 years he was incarcerated. He remains, though in frail health a true inspiration for equal rights for all in South Africa! He epitomizes what freedom... More

I waited too many years to visit this incredible place! The boat trip was fun, the bus ride around the island was interesting and entertaining. And the guided tour by the formed prisoner was surreal. All in all definitely something everyone should experience.

A visit to Robben Island is a "must-do" part of any Cape Town visit. I pre-booked, and arrived at the gateway in plenty of time to visit the exhibition of anti-apartheid posters upstairs; only one other visitor was making the effort to do so. The boat crossing was fine- don't forget to take sunscreen if it's a decent day -... More

Get your camera ready. On the boat ride you can get some nice pictures of the city skyline as your heading to Robben Island. Ex-political prisoners are the tour guides which I found added much more interest to the tour. When the guide finished the tour he quickly stepped out of the room and was wiping tears from his eyes.... More

We were told by locals that this wasnt an experience to miss because we had a lot on our plate in Cape Town, and we are glad we did this. It isnt the most glamorous of experiences. In fact it is an experience that reminds you of the trials and hardships suffered by people. It reminds you how lucky you... More
