Groot Constantia is South Africa's oldest wine producing estate, (est: 1685). Situated 20 minutes from Cape Town central and one of the Big 6 tourist destinations, Groot Constantia is a must visit. With two fine restaurants, Jonkershuis and Simon's (contact details on website), wine tastings, chocolate and wine pairing, cellar tours and a museum that reminds one of a bygone era, this beautiful historic winery is a popular attraction.

We opted for the museum experience rather than the wine tasting. The historic old steading is beautiful and although a fire destroyed quite a chunk in the past, it has been restored to its old glory. Unless you have quite good historical knowledge yourself, the museum itself and its artifacts are not very well explained, one just gets a well... More

A beautiful setting well geared for heaps of tourists. The tours are fabulous and the best Port I have ever had. Tons of history new and old to soak up here. Good places to eat and lots to see and do. If you only have time for one estate - do this one.

In business since 1685, this living museum/winery has served royalty, including Napoleon. Coupled with the marvellous Dutch architecture (1700s era) & well manicured grounds, GC offers something for everyone - wine connoisseur or not you'll enjoy soaking in the history & beauty. The gardens are available for private events (picnics, weddings). Check out the old "sun dial" - the most... More

For such a minimal amount...about £3 a head, we enjoyed 5 lovely Constantia wines. Beautiful gardens and wonderful views. Must see.

A place with deep history dating back to 1600s. The wine farms are a sight to behold. The architecture take you back to the medieval Europe. Oh..and the winery...the tasting...the staff...very amazing. A great place for an adventure traveler...and a chance to share history with the Nobility like Louis XVI (France), Count Otto Von Bismarck(German), Fredrick The Great (King of... More

We went for a wine tasting and a visit of the Manor House. It's a must when visiting Cape Town. The oldest Wine farm in the country produces still excellent wines and has a lovely surrounding to spent an afternoon or even more time. 2 nice restaurants are located at Groot Constantia.

The oldest wine producing farm in South Africa, Groot Constantia turns 330 years old this year! We visiting in January 2015, on a hot, windless summers day. We had a beautiful picnic, supplied by Simon's Deli - a relatively new venture. The picnic basket was filled with a cheese and cold meat board, fresh bread, salads, a chicken curry, some... More

It is always a sheer priviledge to return to these buildings in the Western Cape. Groot Constantia was close to where my family lived -so was often visited......with its endless vineyards, the smell of the ocean and of course the view. The restruant is another draw card to those who can still drink and drive! But having transferred to UK... More

So, maybe we were unlucky with the other people who happened to be there, or maybe we'd been spoilt with other great places. Or maybe we just caught everyone, really everyone, on a bad day. But really, in a region with so many great wineries it's hard to know why you'd stop at this horrible tourist trap. We went for... More
