A 2-hr boat trip on the estuary was part of my booked itinerary and it was worth it. Many, many hippos, several crocs and different birds to see. The captain (a women - yeah!) was very knowledgeable of animals and estuary. Highly recommend.

Try and get onto one of the 'smaller boat' trips, as you will get much closer to Hippo's and Crocodiles. The estuary life is a big part of St Lucia. Take local advice and be careful.

ST LUCIA is located at the entrance to the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. It is said that the area was first discovered in 1554 by survivors of a Portuguese ship called ‘Rio de la Medaos do Oura’. The town is today a tourist centre, and while it has grown considerably it still manages to maintain a relaxed, bubbly holiday atmosphere. Excellent... More

I am not too sure what the hype is all about St Lucia. The place is riddled with your cheap mass market restaurants with bland plain food for the masses, terrible shops, and packed with people!! There is indeed some pretty places to see in and around, but mostly crowded and really stretched. We had a drink at the Boat... More

Good roads meander thru the Estuary to provide excellent viewing of traditional South Africa wildlife. No cats, elephants or giraffes viewed, but plenty of zebra, rhinos, antelope, hippos, hogs and more.

Peace in the wild wilderness with sea and hills all around… highly recommend a visit! Self-drive trip is easy with good maps available at the local tourist office. Buy delicious avo's and granadillas from the locals.

Recommend a river cruise, chose one of the smaller boats like Heritage tours as you get a more personal tour from the guide. You will see Crocs, Hippos, Eagles etc.

It was 3 pm tour. Suppose to be 2 h, was 1h 20 min. We saw 1 crocodile and 4 hippos under the water, cruising about 1 mile for an hour. Waste of time and very disappointing. It was part of the Gate 1 tour. May be another tour operator could do a better job. Check the route.

Where else do hippos wander into the garden of your hotel to snack on the greenery? Where else does the Nile croc socialize with the fish eagle? Why St. Lucia of course!

A little disappointing but not the best time of the year to visit. Was a little too cool for the hippo and they were huddled together on the banks of the estuary. But still saw plenty of hippos, alligators and a beautiful bull water buck. Beautiful time of year for a boat ride for sure.
