The mission of Daktari is to inspire and educate local underprivileged children to care for their environment through the medium of a wildlife orphanage. Every Monday we welcome a new group of 8 to 10 underprivileged children for a week and give them the opportunity to discover, learn and become passionate about wildlife and conservation, their heritage. We also supplement their school curriculum in English, maths, sciences, geography, life skills and social issues. Our goal is to enable today’s local underprivileged children to eventually be able to secure good employment in nature reserves, thereby improving their future quality of life.Every Monday Daktari welcomes 8 to 10 local underprivileged children. As a volunteer you will be teaching the children and working with the animals. Join Daktari and come back with an unforgettable experience. « less

I volunteered at Daktari, for what felt like a very short two weeks. It was one of the most eye opening experiences I've ever had whilst travelling. For two weeks, I helped to clean and maintain the camp, as well as teaching 8 children that came to the camp each week. Ian and Michele, do some wonderful work, bringing these... More

I have submitted this review as a parent. My 18 year old daughter has just completed a 3 month stay at Daktari and it was an amazing experience for her. We recieved lots of help from the staff as we made the preperations and even though my daughter was travelling alone we felt confident that she would be well taken... More

Run entirely on sponsorships, and staffed by volunteers, this rustic little haven for orphaned animals deserves support. A blind donkey, naughty mongooses, a toothless leopard and some regal rooikat-lynxes add to the charm. More

Hello everybody, I was at Daktari from September 2011 to December 2011. It was a very great experience for me. I spent a very good time with all volunteers and staff. It's like a family ! The contact with children is magical. You can't imagine the happiness in their eyes when they manage to do a division or when they... More

I had the most amazing time at Daktari, I can't describe how incredible it was for me. I learned so much, about the kids, life in south africa, the animals (especially my two wonderful piggies, oh how I miss them), and myself too. I met so many great people in Michele, Ian, Risette and all the volunteers. It really was... More

The only thing I regret about my trip to Daktari is that I coulnd't stay for longer. I only had a fortnight off work and wanted to do something different than the usual beach / city break. Daktari gave me an opportunity to work with animals and children, see the beautiful wildlife of South Africa and experience life in the... More

In the middle of the bush, the children are welcomed for a week and the volunteers share a week of teaching with them. There are also some wild orphaned or injured animals and everybody is taking care of... More

One of the most fantastic experiences of my life! I truly felt I was one of the family - and have been welcomed back with open arms since as a guest, not a volunteer, over the Christmas period. Michele and Ian are very friendly, open and knowledgable and you feel you have entered a home - albeit a very different... More
