This should be a thriving square but it's surrounded by restaurants - many of the out of business. When these business are populated again, it should be a wonderful time to spend an afternoon.

This area is a quiet area to shop and relax. Stop at one of the many eating places or bars. Night life is alive with both locals and tourists. Trumps is a very good restaurant. The Hard Rock Cafe a great place for a drink and lunch.

Visited here quite often while I stayed in Jo Burg in Feb 2015, my hotel was next door. It's a good place with lots of restaurants and shops in next door shopping mall. Don't forget to take picture with Mandela's big bronze statue.

Nelson Mandela Square is worth a visit if for nothing more to see the huge statue of Mandela. The square is undergoing some renovations so is currently not at its best, but still is the home to great restaurants. Has a nice vibe to it if the weather is good, which is the case in Johannesburg most of the year... More

We have eaten here many times. Its a great place to 'people watch' over some lunch and a glass of wine. Although the Sq itself is starting to look a bit tired, a renovation is under way and I look forward to seeing the finished results on our next visit. We miss Baglio's restaurant on the corner of the Sq... More

Worth the look if you're like me, proudly South African. But it's impersonal for South Africans, with a more international market.

The square is dominated by a very impressive large bronze statue of Nelson Mandela with some restaurants dotted around the square. It is within walking distance of the Intercontinental hotel, which is very handy. There is also a small shopping mall nearby with some very nice, but expensive clothes.

A must do if you are in Sandton.... even if it's a little too much of a temple of capitalism... which doesn't necessarily fit the personage.
