A popular tourist stop, this jail slid 225 feet downhill during a "land slippage" caused by the many mining shafts in the area.

I had really wanted to see the sliding jail after reading about its story. It was hard to find until we were given directions to it. The jail is in total disarray. I am glad I saw it once since it is part of the history of Jerome.

Must have to take a tour to appreciate, not hard to find but nice story about the jail. Must be how the town makes ends meet with everyone tossing coins into the old jail location...

Take the Jerome tours and tell the guide you need to see the old jail including the women's jail!! Old time mining town with tons of saloon's & brothels and so many arrest they had 2 jails!! step inside a cell & see how small an area they had.

The sliding jail is a neat piece of Jerome history. It's worth reading about it and taking a look at it.

Jerome is a wonderful place to visit; evocative, historical, thought-provoking and no place in the town is more interesting that the sliding jail. It is the 1890s at their finest, and well worth stopping by.

Its hard to fathom the force of the explosion the caused this jail and other buildings to slide down the mountain. I'm glad I don't live on that era. I'm glad they kept it in town. What a cook piece of history.

We walked by this during our Haunted Ghost tour, and it is amazing to think that the entire building used to be across the street!

There is no sign informing you, that you are at the jail. Drove passed it twice before stopping at the welcome center and asking where it was. Was told that they weren't open yet, but it was right there. Who was to know that it was covered in weeds and not even a sign to indict, here is the jail.... More

Visit the sliding jail cell in the parking lot a few stairs below the visitor centre. Easy to do a walking tour of other locations in Jerome as well.
