Spent 4 days recently here photographing bears and birds. The setting is incredible -- black bears against bright green foliage and moss. The interpretive USFS rangers were excellent. They were friendly, knowledgeable, smart, and most importantly they used common sense and did not over react or freak out (like rangers I have seen in NPS bear viewing parks in Alaska).... More

we went with Breakaway Adventures. There were two couples on this trip. There’s about a 30 minute ride to the Forest Service dock, followed by 4-5 hours at the observatory itself (personally, I didn’t need to spend that much time there, but others were sorry to leave), so take water to drink. (You are told to leave anything with a... More

We absoluteky loved our tour of Anan. There were many bears to see, our guides were helpful and took great care of us, whilst ensuring care of the wildlife and environment as well. This was definitely the highlight of of trip to Wrangell.

If you have a day to spare, sign up for this amazing experience! A beautiful walk through a emerald green forest (thanks to an abundance of summer rain) to a very safe lookout where one can watch black and brown bears gorging themselves on salmon and eagles waiting to swoop up the remains. Nature at its finest. Anan tours takes... More

All I can say is WOW! Wonderful viewing area to get up close to the wildlife. WE saw at least a dozen different bears. Informative people to answer questions and keep the guests safe. Will definitely go again!

We visited in July this year with John from Summit Charters & Walter was our guide. After a very interesting walk through the woods to the viewing area we saw a lot of bears in the creek catching salmon & a couple on land. This was such a great experience & well worth the visit. Getting there is also part... More

John Taylor of Summit Charters took our group of 8 to Anan. Walter was our guide. It was awesome. We saw several bears up-close and personal and learned a lot. We also saw a lot of bald eagles and salmon. Not cheap but very much worth it.

Anan Observatory is a wonderful place to view black...and if you're lucky, brown...bears up close. Eagles abound in the area and there's even an outhouse should you need it. A boardwalk takes you to the observation deck and you do have to be able to walk approximately 1/2 mile to and then back from the viewing deck...but if you're able,... More

Close encounters with bears in their natural environment while they are walking around, fishing, fighting with each other or with the bald eagles which were more successful fishers. Must have seen.
