Our driver told us that this was the finish line for the nearly 100 mile , 6 man outrigger canoe race that takes a total of three days. As we carefully maneuvered through the other motorized boats, the last two of the competitors... More

We were lucky enough to be at Matira Beach on the day the Hawaiki Nui race finished. It was an amazing spectacle of colour and joy with crowds of people cheering on the canoeists as they finished 3 days of paddling. The pristine water and blue sky is stunning.

After lunch at one of the snacks here, we found a tree and took shade for a little nap. The lagoon is beautiful, and it's a pretty beach to spend some time at.

But if you're wanting to see coral and fish, this is not the spot. Endless swimming and fabulous sunsets are waiting at Matira Beach.

It's taken me some time to talk myself into giving up the not-so-well-kept secret that the m/s Paul Gauguin in French Polynesia is quite simply one of the most elegant, exquisite, highly awarded ships at sea. That one must book a cruise on her to get to the various beaches in French Polynesia is the main attraction (I think the... More

The beach is ok, the sand is very hard in fact not nice to walk on, their are far better beaches in many places , the sea was clean and clear, the prices charged on the beach for drinks or food scandalous, this is one island we were looking forward to but wouldnt return , over priced not the best... Beaches in French Polynesia are public....so it is fine to spread your towel under a tree in front of a house....but be courteous, quiet and don't litter. Water is shallow for a long way out....and clean.

We took a shuttle to this beach, the public beach on Bora Bora. You can walk out to the reef if you have the energy we got about half way. Had to really employ common sense or we would have been there for hours. $5 per person shuttle from town every 20 minutes or so. Heavenly.
