Caroline Bay is one of the safest beaches in New Zealand particularly for families with young children. It has been recently upgraded with good parking and picnic spots under shady trees. Best of all is the fun attractions right there to keep the family entertained.

Find out from the Visitors Center the time to see the penguins march in from the ocean at night. While there, see the Maori Rock Art display, which you can also go visit in person if you have the time.

Caroline Bay, Timaru's jewel, offers wonderful, safe bathing, a lovely Rose Garden and aviary, walkways with interesting features such as local sculpture and an ornamental fountain, a boardwalk through the dunes, a skatepark and playground, minigolf, views of the sea and mountains, Little Blue Penguins, and many nearby cafes and restaurants. Around Christmas there is a carnival which has become... More

Heaps of improvements done over the years. Ample parking, fantastic Boardwalk, changing rooms, roller skating rink, amazing playground, toilets, skate park, penguins on the beach at night, very safe and flat with very little waves.

First came to Caroline Bay when kids were young, and we lived in Queenstown. Great place for kids, the Annual Carnival can be good, and it costs $0 to attend. Now we live in Timaru, and go to the beach frequently, unless there is a high wind creating a sandstorm !!

Whether or like structured rose gardens, picnics, long walks down a scenic beach, or looking at wildlife, Caroline. Bay Beach has it all. The penguins can be seen most nights at 10:00 around the periphery of the beach and the Trevor Griffiths rose garden is romantic and definitely worth a look.

This is a great park with lots of different areas and pockets of things for kids to do (not teens) Can be quite a walk but watch out for all the dog poop everywhere ( very disappointing that people do not clean up after their dogs) Beach is nothing to rave about, typical South Island beach. Has a beautiful rose... More
