This is a great hike for the entire family rewarded by panoramic views of the Knik glacier, Chugach Mountains, the Alaska Range, and the Talkeetna Mountains. There are two routes up the butte with the easiest on the West side off of Mothershead Drive (toilets available at the trailhead only). Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy while admiring the beautiful scenery.... More

I saw the great reviews here and went there for a hike after a visit to the reindeer farm. I was surprised with how dusty the trail was. It is full of grey & dry powdery soil. There is no way to avoid breathing puffs of dust raised by climbers just in front of you. Not my idea of a... More

If you want to get to the top of a mountain but have little time or kids with short attention spans them this is the way to go. Loved the views. They make the challenge worth it.

3 of us "mature" individuals have done this in 2011 & again now in 2013. It is worth the climb (it is a workout for us that are not in great shape but a very doable climb) to see the view & as it is a hidden gem. They have added lots more stairs the last year to make it... More

We are 2 adults and 3 kids ages 12, 6 and 4. I didn't know if my 4 year old would make it. She did! We had to carry her the last 1/4 mile but she did the majority herself. View is gorgeous at the top. Well worth it!

360 degree views including Matanuska River, Knik Glacier and an aerial view of the reindeer farm to boot! Flat and bald on top - hence the views - but very steep going up so some fitness required. Very rewarding for less than 1 hour of exercise. Short and steep but views are sweet!

The trail is fairly easy climb to the top of the Butte. Wonderful views every where I looked. The dogs enjoyed the hike also. The reindeer farm is right by the butt and so this is fun also

This is a fairly fast hike, I think about 800 feet elevation gain--(45 minutes), a bit steep in a few parts if you aren't really a hiker--but safe enough for kids. The views on a clear day are awesome. You can see the Knik glacier and watch Cessna planes fly by. The only down side is it can get windy... More

This is a nice hike if you go up the "easy" side. The view is worth the hike. I can't wait to go again with all my family.

Hiking the Butte during the summer provides a great view of the Matanuska and Knik River Valleys. Takes about 45 minutes at a good brisk rate. Decent trail on the south side of the Butte.
