This island is totally awesome. It sits on the edge of Tongass National Forest. It is so loverly -- the trees on one side, the bay on the other -- so peaceful, calming, and soothing. I totally recommend that people visit this island [where the cities of Ketchikan and Saxman are located]

Head out to Ward for a lovely trail walk. Hope for a sunny day! South on the road go to Rotary -Buggy Beach. Interesting stones/ rocks. Herring Cove will have salmon and bears.

We rented motorcycles (Panhandle Motorcycle Adventures) and did a trip around the island - actually, back and forth since there is no "around". The lake in the interior is worth a gander. Drop in on Herring Cove to see some salmon making there way up the river. And at the other end, wind along the roads to Totem Bight and... More

Small friendly town, but too many bars and liquor stores for my taste, and too much alcohol being consumed for it's own good, unfortunately! Alaska has the highest per capita consumption of alcohol. I lived there for 14 years, in the late 1960's, till 1975. There are far fewer bars downtown now, and replaced by endless jewelry stores and tourist... More

Most people either visit Ketchikan only when their cruise ship stops there, or go to take advantage of the salmon and halibut fishing opportunities. We went to visit family and explore the island a bit. It did not disappoint! From the hikes at Ward Lake, Lamonna Lake, and Settler's Cove, to the spawning salmon and black bears at Herring Cove,... I am biased - I live here, and the island, known simply to locals as Revilla is an adventure playground. Ketchikan is the main town and with 26 miles of road it forms a small enclave of people while the rest of the island remains free of major settlements. The Misty Fjords National Monument claims the east side of the... More
