We recently went on inside passage cruise to Alaska, and the highlight of the cruise was visiting the Mendenhall glacier. You can go by bus or by helicopter. You really need to see a glacier if you make the trip the whole way to Alaska..I did and it pretty impressive more

Walking on the Mendenhall Glacier was absolutely beautiful. We chose to get there by helicopter, but there are also excursions that reach the glacier surface via a hiking trail, which requires the participants to be in fairly decent shape. The helicopter piece was exciting on its own since we were able to get a great view of Juneau and its... more

Our visit to the Mendenhall Glacier was one of the highlights of our trip up the Inland Passage in Alaska. The glacier appears as a frozen river of blue ice on its way to the lake that is in the foreground. You can't actually walk on the glacier, but there are great views from all along the shore of the... more

Great site in Juneau Alaska to see. This glacier is easily accessable to see. If you are adventurous then you can hike the trail and get a close up view or you can still get a great view from the front side from the observation areas and even the parking lot. If you are a photographer you will really love... more

I wanted to take the time to share my experience with Gastineau Guiding Company and the tour we took on Aug 26th, 2009, Portrait of the Mendenhall Glacier, guided by Brandon Hauser. From the moment I stumbled across their Website, which I caught in a travel book, Fodor’s 2006, I had a great feeling that we were in for a... more

Our family took a helicopter tour that landed on the glacier and we were able to walk around for an hour on top of it. It was a wonderful time and probably the highlight of everyone's vacation. It's really a magical experience walking on top of the glacier. You really lose your sense of scale and proportions when you're on... more

Our party of nine bought the $14 round trip MMT shuttle tickets at a booth near the cruise ship dock. Shuttles leave every 30 minutes, and the drivers had entertaining comments about the drive. We took a short walk from the parking lot to the creek/nature trail, and were rewarded by a view of a black bear with her two... more

We have been to several glaciers in the Alaska interior. This is our first experience with the Inside Passage. I can't tell you how much I've missed the fresh, crisp, almost pure air. The Mendenhall Glacier is a must see :) As what was written, if you walk off the cruise ship, you can go to a booth, and pay... more

Great reviews below mine; but, let me add: Yes, take the MGE (or MGT..I don't know which) bus...buy a ticket from the guy in the booth...the blue bus runs every 1/2 hr. I think they have 2 because our driver, Dave, said the other driver was Frank. Bus lets you right off at the parking lot; short walk to glacier.... more

Just 15 minutes outside of Juneau -- you can get here by taxi, shuttle, or for the hearty of the bunch, bicycle -- to a land of crystal-clear water, and ice. The ice is so pure and old that it's blue, appearing to shine from the inside. Why is the glacier blue? The short answer is that after thousands of... more
