Going to Juneau, and not going to the Mendenhall Glacier, is like going to Paris, and not going up the Eiffel Tower; It's synonymous with Juneau. One of the most easily accessible glaciers anywhere in the world, it's a pretty spot, and the visitor's center and trail system are both large enough that you don't feel like you're in a... More

Why visit Juneau and not come to the Mendenhall Visitor Center? It's simply a must see. For one, you can often see bears and salmon and beavers near the parking lots before you even get to the Visitor Center. Once inside, you can see for yourself the story of glacial recession through excellent displays and a short video. And you... More

It's a huge glacier with a waterfall and walking trails and bears and beavers and minks and all kinds of cool stuff. I am in no way an outdoorsy guy, but I've spent hours exploring this area, more than once, in all kinds of weather. It's really cool!

Where else can you get up close and personal with a HUGE glacier? Perfect picture taking locations and a great hands-on presentation station and museum. Walk the paths through the glacier sand and silt all the way up to the glacier itself for a great outdoor experience. Or take the paths along the Mendenhall river to see the glacier ecosystem.... Excellent hiking trails (East Glacier Loop) is about 3 miles, with great views of the glacier, rain forest, and waterfalls. Also can take short hike to Nugget Falls. Exhibit center has small fee, but worthwhile.

One of the closest glaciers to an urban area in the world. Great views of the glacier and mountains when the weather is good. Also, a great place to see black bears feeding on salmon from late July to early September!

Any trip to Juneau requires a visit to the Mendenhall Glacier. Tour buses will drop you off right at the Visitor's Center where you can learn about the history of the glacier and watch ice calve off the face. For the more adventurous, book a helicopter ride and land on the glacier itself. Standing on ice that is thousands of... More

Mendenhall Glacier is a beautiful example of geology in action. As this huge river of ice grinds its way towards the ocean, its grandeur awes visitors and residents alike. The Forest Service has created a park that is a haven for wildlife and offers ample viewing areas that are safe for both the animals and observers.

While in Juneau visiting the Mendenhall Glacier is must. The USFS Visitor Center (there is a fee for the center) is a good place to start your education of the area. I would definately reccomend that you walk out to the falls and see the glacier from a closer vantagepoint.
