It's just awesome to look at a glacier. You feel like pinching yourself to make sure that you aren't dreaming. My late husband and I were standing on this glacier taking pictures, etc. in 1999. I went back in June 2013 and again September 2014 and both times, the glacier had melted back by about 1,000 feet from where I... More

Mendenhall Glacier is very easily accessible to Juneau and the airport. I'd say it's about a 20 minute drive from downtown Juneau. Maybe 30. There are a lot of trails to get closer to Nugget Falls and the Glacier, but we only went as far as the falls as there were bears spotted recently. It is free in the low... More

We splurged and took a helicopter ride up to the glacier. It was an awesome experience. The company provides the gear to you (boots and outerwear). The helicopter ride provides an absolutely stunning view of the glacier, mountains, and even wildlife. The glacier itself is amazing. We were able to walk around, learn about crevices, and drink water from a... More

We had a short visit as part of our trip on the Fjordland day cruise to Juneau. It was a cool cloudy day but our bus driver assured us this was the best kind of weather because it highlighted that unmistakable glacial blue of the ice. And right he was. We didn't have time to walk out to the falls... More

What can you say about any chance you would get to actually walk on a Glacier? I was dazzled by the blue and just amazed by everything I saw. We had the opportunity to drink from a glacial stream and I will never forget it. We did this one by helicopter for optimal viewing.

Really enjoyed this Glacier and Visitor Center. Very well maintained and informative. My son really enjoyed climbing on the rocks. Makes one really appreciate the size and beauty of the Glaciers.

We went on a 4.5 hour hike through the forest and up to a mountain facing the glacier. We were treated to unusually good weather and a very nice and enthusiastic guide. Take proper gear i.e. hiking boots and 2 layers of clothes, enough water and an energy bar. Stay curious, ask the guide all you can!

The falls are gorgeous, you need really two and a half hours there to really take your time and enjoy the entire Glacier and what it has to offer. Juneau Tours only gave 45 minutes there, although gave our group 15 more minutes. If you want to bask at the beauty from the bottom and then walk out closer to... More

Went with some fellow travelers to take a 3 mile hike up some waterfalls and rocks to the west side of the glacier. It was amazing, hiked down to the ice caves and even though some people said they were no longer there! So beautiful and cold, and worth all the crazy hiking through the pouring rain to get there!

Visiting the Mendenhall Glacier should take several hours if you're able. There are hiking trails that lead to Nugget Falls (a towering waterfall that cascades over 300 feet). If you visit during salmon spawning, Steep Creek is an excellent walk to view Sockeye Salmon at work. The visitor center has interpretive exhibits, ranger talks and a movie to watch. Do... More
