Description: If coming from Skagway your journey begins with a short walk from the pier...
If coming from Skagway your journey begins with a short walk from the pier where you'll board a high-speed ferry for a 45-minute cruise along North America's longest and deepest fjord to Haines. Enjoy spectacular views and informative commentary from your guide on the wildlife, geology, and beautiful landscape. Watch for whales along the way, as you glide past breathtaking glaciers and cascading waterfalls. Upon arrival in Haines, enjoy a tour of historic Fort Seward before heading to your paddling destination at Chilkoot Lake. This incredible location is home to all five species of Pacific salmon, numerous bald eagles, waterfowl and one of the highest concentrations of brown bears in southeast Alaska! You will be outfitted in the necessary equipment, receive a water-safety briefing, a thorough introduction to kayaking, and then start out onto the water. No previous experience is necessary and the expert guides will quickly make everyone at ease in the kayaks. The triple kayaks are very stable, spacious, and make excellent viewing platforms. Everyone will enjoy the excitement of kayaking in the midst of towering mountains and spectacular scenery. You may also be treated to outstanding bear viewing during the riverside drive to the lake and while paddling. Multiple spawning streams enter the lake and offer frequent bear and eagle sightings. You'll have 1.75 hours to explore by kayak. The location is chosen to provide the best kayaking and wildlife-viewing conditions and there is no better way to fully experience the beauty of Alaska!

My experience with Alaska Mountain Guides was amazing; the guides either grad students or hip 30 somethings who were transplants to Alaska and clearly loved the outdoors. They were well trained, friendly, professional, and knowlegeable. I would sign up for another Wilderness Kayak Adventure again, in a heartbeat, simply for the guides. Or, for that matter, ANY Alaskan Mountain Guide... More

Even though it rained most of the trip, Cedar and Katie did a great job with leading us. Very helpful with teaching us how to use the sea kayaks and very knowledgeable about the area wildlife. Saw numerous eagles on the beautiful lake, then a grizzly and an eagle snatching a salmon from the river on the way back!! Ended... More

The day that we arrived for our trip, seas were rough and weather was poor. Our AMG guide, Leslie, was incredibly flexible and accommodating. She made sure that we got the trip for which we had traveled so far, despite uncooperative weather. She worked hard to show us an amazing time from the second that we stepped off of the... More

My 9 year old is a big lover of wild life animals and he wanted to see the bald eagle, salmon fish and bears on this tour. The guide Dawn was very helpful. She gave us lots of information on this area. She took us to the spots where most wild lives could be found. There's a spot with lots... More

We took a half day trip on the Chilkoot river. It was an awesome trip. Our guides were great, very educational and friendly. Kayaked along the shore where salmon were spawning and saw tons of beautiful sockeye salmon. Great time with family

We booked a full day on the Blanchard and Tatshenini rivers with Alaska Mountain Guides. From Haines it is nearly a 3 hour drive to the put in and another hour to deliver the take-out location, but the staff did a great job at making us comfortable during the wait. Our guide, Tatiana, was extremely experienced and very relaxed. She... More

My husband and I were on a cruise that stopped in Skagway. Neither of us had ever been kayaking and my husband suggested it as one of our excursions. I was a little nervous, but agreed. Our guide met us at the port and bussed us to the ferry boat. We road that to Haines where we met our other... More

Our family of 6 really enjoyed this adventure. We kayak at home so the paddling was easy on this smooth lake. The scenery was absolutely breath taking. Our 4 guides were easy going and friendly but very attentive to the needs of the group. They gave instructions in a positive way and encouraged my youngest son on his efforts. It... More
