We drove into San Jose on a Sunday which is recommended as it is less busy and there is less traffic on the roads. Once we arrived at the Museo Nacional, we paid admission for the two adults, as our kids were free. We entered the butterfly gardens first and we were amazed! It was beautiful and peaceful in there... More

This museum is housed in a tastefully updated early 20th century fortress, right in the central city. It consists of a range of exhibits designed to provide a selective overview of the history and culture of Costa Rica, ranging in time from the earliest human immigrants to 20th century social/cultural issues. There is an impressive collection of preColumbian artifacts, as... More

Traveled here with our daughters, ages 12 and 9. Excellent displays and information in both Spanish and English. Some hands-on displays where we could touch artifacts and replicas. Great maps and explanations of pre-Colombian Costa Rica that set the backdrop for our visit.

As you first walk in you are greeted by a butterfly garden! Each exhibit is labelled in Spanish and English, very informative. I found the history of the fort and photographs very interesting. Good for children.

I loved the history of this place. You get a real feel of history in this old fort turned into a museum. I just wish more of the displayed were in English.

It is an interesting museum because it has a variety of things to see. It is a quick way of getting a brief summary of the country. Located in the city centre of San Jose, the building from outside is worth to see it. You can see a garden with butterflies, learn about some indigent culture and they also have... More

Very interresting to visit, you should have a guide with you who speaks perfectly your language, that helps too much. The location is in a road a bit crowded but the Museum is very beautiful.

Set within an old fort, the Museo Nacional gives a full look at the development and evolution of the people of this area. The curators have laid a good foundation for this depiction although it could be more sophisticated in the exhibits. A smoother flow through the history of the nation with better narrative accounts would be helpful to the... More
