This place had a wide range of things to see. My sister loved the ancient stone and metal (I`m not that impressed by this kind of thing....) and I loved the exhibit of the antique furniture and information about the fort. A little something for everyone.

stepping into a butterfly garden is a great start to the national Museum of Costa Rica. Located in an old fortress, it contains memories of what it used to be used for, as well as a little bit of everything else, from taxidermied jaguars, to music of latin america and dance steps to match. well worth the entrance fee. This museum has wonderful exhibits. The museum displays are excellent and very informative. I was very impressed after having seen the National Museum in Managua the day before. Costa Rica's museum is much more impressive by comparison. The bullet holes on the outside of the museum remain as a testament to the Civil War that took place in the 1940's.... More

The Museo Nacional is in the very center and provides a good start to learn a little bit about the country. You stroll through a butterfly garden first and see the colorful creatures being "born" out of the chrysalis. Then you learn something about the Pre-Columbian culture and later about more recent history. They also offer changing exhibitions, everything in... More

This fort turned museum helped me to understand the previous military presence in Costa Rica and how and when the army was disbanded. The basement area is a wonderful butterfly exhibit, some of the most unusual and lovely butterflies I've seen in a really historic space. Going up to ground level there is a layout of what can be accessed.... More

It is worth the trip. A bit confusing to make a full loop, not sure if I missed anything. I like the human skulls and funeral rite section. Special exhibits show respect for the indigenous peoples. The building is undergoing renovation, the bottom floor which I almost missed, is unusual, shows more evidence of the buildings original use as a... More

You really should visit this museum to get a complete understanding of the history of Costa Rica. It is very well done and the butterfly garden is outstanding.

Spent an enjoyable couple hours here. You enter through a butterfly garden, and proceed on to the fossils and pre-Columbian artifacts exhibit. Many very intricate and elaborate pots and carved stone objects on display. The museum was formerly a military fort built by the Spanish, and the latrines, showers, and punishment cells are preserved and on display. There is also... More

The national museum was so beautiful and stunning. From gold fixtures to marble staircases it is really a beauty. It has a rich history as I found out with my tour guide in English.
