Really impressive museum housed in old fort overlooking San Jose. Great place to visit on a Sunday afternoon and peruse through 5-6 different sections. It is full of authentic relics and examples of life over centuries in Costa Rica. Most of the information is also translated in english which is helpful to many.

Easy to walk to. Immaculate inside. Glad to pay for my entrance to keep artifacts available for viewing. Lots to see and learn.

But I just want to let people know that they have the nerve to charge foreign/tourists way more than locals and most of the display information is entirely in Spanish, which I think is ridiculous. What about those that can't read Spanish? How can they make them pay more? In protest I refused to go in, and I think others... More

This museum in downtown San Jose has lots of interesting artifacts and tells the history of Costa Rica.. The butterfly garden is well worth the price of admission.

This museum was quite a surprise. The artifacts display cover Pre-Columbian history of the indigenous people from more than 12000 years ago up until the Spanish arrival. Several displays show the artistry in stone sculpting - similar to what is found in Mayan culture. The stone spheres found in Costa Rica (some on display) are found no where else in... More

We saw this on our own as part of a personal extension we made to our tour to see San Jose. This Museum really gave us a feel for Costa Rica's historical background, and it was extremely interesting. Not to be missed.

We enjoyed our visit to the museum - it gave a sense of history to our first visit to Costa Rica. The building that housing the museum is interested and I enjoyed the butterfly park at the entrance.

Small museum with several areas, all demonstrating part of CR history. Our favorite area was the natural history rooms with artifacts and scenes from ancient life in Costa Rica. Good value and worth a trip if you like natural history.

My husband and I stayed in San Jose an extra couple of days just to check out the museum. This one is very interesting facts about Costa Rica. There is a butterfly garden inside too. It housed lovely Morpho Butterflies. The butterflies are drab on the outside of the wings but a vibrant blue on the inside of the wings... More

I have been there with my Mom and by myself and I always remember here as my favorite destination to learn about the history of these beloved Costa Rica. From gold to presidents to Cristobal Colon to Indians. These should be a must if you are visiting Costa Rica.
