You can watch the butterflies hatch right in the museum. There is a large selection of stone & ceramic artifacts and a few gold pieces as well. They have a few sizes of the stone spheres and one huge stone sphere, as well as the one under the artsy canopy outside the front door. Some interesting historical photos of the... More

This was a bit of a surprise for us as we expected just another one of your run of the mill museums. Be warned though, the staff finished work early and as our stuff was in one of their lockers we ended up having to get a security guard to access our stuff. Very annoying which resulted in us walking... More

Well, the museum used to be the headquarters of the army and now it's a beautiful museum. Just by the entrance there is a place full of butterflies flying all around us. Then the museum is divided in sections talking about the history and the culture of Costa Rica. It's a travel through time! It's really worth the visit! And... More

Arrived and walked thru the butterfly garden. And there was a concert in the outdoor area. Some interesting displays, but really enjoyed the display of gold items.

I went to the National Museum after having visited the Jade and Gold museums, but i should have started with this one. It is a nice place to learn about Costa Rican history and culture. If you can only get to one, then visit this place for a comprehensive history lesson. Another bonus is that you have to walk through... More

We were told about the amazing cafe (which was) but not about the history and offerings in a stunning building steeped in interesting stories.

We drove into San Jose on a Sunday which is recommended as it is less busy and there is less traffic on the roads. Once we arrived at the Museo Nacional, we paid admission for the two adults, as our kids were free. We entered the butterfly gardens first and we were amazed! It was beautiful and peaceful in there... More

This museum is housed in a tastefully updated early 20th century fortress, right in the central city. It consists of a range of exhibits designed to provide a selective overview of the history and culture of Costa Rica, ranging in time from the earliest human immigrants to 20th century social/cultural issues. There is an impressive collection of preColumbian artifacts, as... More

Traveled here with our daughters, ages 12 and 9. Excellent displays and information in both Spanish and English. Some hands-on displays where we could touch artifacts and replicas. Great maps and explanations of pre-Colombian Costa Rica that set the backdrop for our visit.
