I really enjoyed my trip to the National Museum and learnt lots about Costa Rican history. The building is beautiful and very well looked after.

This was our first stop on our trip to Costa Rica, and what a great place to begin! There is a wide variety of exhibits here. You enter through a butterfly garden and pass on to exhibits featuring cultural and historical artifacts as well as examples of pre-Columbian gold ornaments and several preserved rooms of the commander's quarters. The museum... More

This is a small but wonderful museum. It houses some fabulous pre-Columbian artifacts including pottery, stone sculptures, gold and jade. It is in the old Bellavista Fortress. Its tower and walls are riddled with bullet holes from the civil war of 1948. You enter through a butterfly garden with beautiful foliage but very few butterflies.

Just a beautiful museum to take your time and enjoy the history of Costa Rica by yourself or with the family. You need to allow at least 2 hours to enjoy everything.

The butterfly gardens were by far the best ever! There are many many different varerities of butterflies and they land on you if your lucky! Hen you go on to the rest of the museum and you will see the way Ticos lived in the past. Overall it's a great museum to visit.

This is a very good pre-Colombian museum but either the name is a bit misleading or else the museum itself is a bit of a stumper. Whenever I've gone into national museums in other republics, I've walked out knowing considerably more about the republic than I knew when I walked in. And for events I already knew about, i would... Take the time to visit the Museo Nacional in San Jose, Costa Rica. It is very well done gives a good overview of Tico history. I'd recommend visiting this before you do much else in Costa Rica, just to have a sense of the people and their past. The fact that it is in an old fort, and the reasons... More

We were pleasantly surprised at this museum. The first section is a butterfly garden inside the old fort. After that you go at your own pace through history of the fort, history of the civilizations there, and some pre-columbian gold. We went slow and I think it took 3 hours. I thought the price was good and it was worth... More
