The national museum was so beautiful and stunning. From gold fixtures to marble staircases it is really a beauty. It has a rich history as I found out with my tour guide in English.

The national museum has an interesting collection of artifacts and provides in a nutshell the history of the country. The butterfly garden at the entry is nice, rarely seen such large ones. The buildings are interesting too. It is not modern but worth spending some time

You enter into a butterfly atrium and just follow the natural progression of things through Costa Rica's development. They have an exhibit similar to the Gold Museum and a lot of natural history.

One can spend 4 hours in this place which is extremely interesting. It is very cheap. It is a quick ten minutes from downtown San Jose.

This museum, like every other museum in San Jose except the Gold Museum, was closed for the Christmas holidays, not a great move for a country dependant on tourism.

I would not go to both the Jade Museum and the National Museum, especially if you are stretched for time. I went to the Jade Museum first and the National Museum has a lot of the same.

As you enter the museum which was originally a fort you walk through a butterfly garden with many butterflies fluttering around you. It was beautiful and fun to watch the butterflies. As you leave this area you enter into the old fort and can see photos of the days leading up to the disbanding of the army. The upper floor... More
