The butterfly building you walk through is interesting and the fort itself is pretty cool. Exhibits were sparse and wasn't nearly enough information posted about Costa Rican history. They seemed to skip major eras and there was a lot of overlap with the other museums.

My husband and I visited this museum on our last day in Costa Rica. When the military was dissolved in 1948, the fort was re-purposed, eventually into a museum. Just past the entrance is a lovely butterfly habitat. . The museum itself houses a variety of exhibits and includes the commandant's house with period furnishings. The only drawback to our... More

Built in a converted military fort, this museum offers a leisurely and informative view of the country's history.

This was interesting if you are a history buff. There was also a very nice butterfly exhibit. There were some great views of the city as well on some of the terraces

We had already visited the Gold Museum and the Jade Museum, but this was the best of the 3. If you only have time to visit one, this should be it!

Get to know a little about the culture and history of Costa Rica . I spent a few hours here and still want to go back . Nice park outside and the area is close to other attractions as well .

Loved the archaeological section and learning about the indigenous peoples of Costa Rica. Next time I visit, I want to see the actual sites!

This historic museum is a must-visit stop for anyone interested in the history of Costa Rica, archaeology, and Costa Rican culture. The restorations of the buildings were done with much care and they hold many pleasant surprises, such as the colonial time rooms, rotating art exhibits, a gorgeous inner garden, and a spectacular archaeological collection on exhibit. The entrance through... More

Building has historical significance and is well maintained. The butterfly garden is a pleasant bonus but the actual exhibits are limited.

The museum offers a great display of general things related to the building and also Costa Rican's history. I really enjoyed it and the special exhibit area is a nice touch. My favorite part, by far, was the butter fly exhibit.
