My wife and i came here on a guided hike with Terraventures. We came during the beginning of the rainy season so there weren't very many tourists and we got a private tour. We saw tons of animals including monkeys and sloths, hermit crabs, spiders, frogs, and learned about the various medicinal plants and poisonous trees. The first thing to... More

We (four adults) wandered down to the park one afternoon with no expectations. Drive past the "town," which is really just a few restaurants, to get to the mouth of the river that you cross to get to the amazing views. We walked just inland from the beach and made it to the wooden outlook. What a picturesque setting. The... More

We had an interesting half day hike with a local guide. The rainforest is just bursting with life. We were lucky to see a sloth, a boa constrictor and a few golden eyelash vipers, as well as a tolomuco! If I were to do it over again I would combine the hike and boating trip to go out and see... We booked our tour through ATEC located in the center of Puerto Viejo. We chose ATEC because they support the community with many projects such as school fundraisers. Our guide was Florentino. We highly recommend him. He was enthusiastic, personable and very knowledgeable. He lent us gum boots and showed us around his garden before we started the hike. He... More

My wife, daughter, and I were led through the Manzanillo wildlife refuge by Abel. His knowledge, humor, and experience made this a fantastic experience. If your going on a hike in the refuge, get a guid, and if you get a guid, get Abel!

It was still free but they were building what looked like a large welcome centre so not sure if they will be charging an entrance fee soon. The first part of the trail is easy but soon the trail becomes hilly, muddy and slippery. We were in Manzanillo for 5 days and it rained 2 days (one day practically non... More

Wading a stream we entered this refuge not sure waht to expect. Maybe the stream was as hard as it got? Are we glad it wasn't! Through thick jungle bush, up and down mud covered paths, sloths, monkeys, spiders, snakes and ants. Lots of ants. We came out at the sea side and our guide had both pineapple and cocnut... More
