Avellanes is an incredible beach. It is HUGE, beautiful, not too crowded and the waves are fantastic. There is a small parking lot with a very friendly attendant (pay 1000 colones when you leave) who will pull fresh water up from a well so you can rinse off/wash your feet before you leave. Lola's restaurant has delicious food and you... More

This is a great beach to go to to get away from the people. Nice sand to walk a long distance. This beach is very welcoming but not touristy.

Beautiful beach about 20 minutes from downtown Tamarindo. The waves were great for body surfing. There is a great restaurant called Lola's that has food and drinks and bathrooms! If you are interested in surfing there is a surf store about 1Km before you get to the beach and one guy at the beach offering lessons. Perfect day to grab... More

I'm from Costa Rica and I go to Guanacaste a few times a year. This is by far my favorite beach in the area, do not miss it.

Very long white sand beach with a low slope and great waves. Water was very warm and fun for boogie boarding.

Playa Avellanes is a beautiful beach at the end of a dusty dirt round just south of Tamarindo. The water is a beautiful azul blue color with tide pools and an idyllic sandy beach. It is frequented by locals and tourists and even though we visited during the green season it was pretty busy. Probably given it's location to Tamarindo.... More

We spent a day at Avellanes and I'm so happy we made the trip from Tamarindo. It's only about 25 minutes away and very easy to find with the road signage. We plugged it into our GPS, but it kept sending us the wrong way so we gave up on it. You don't need it anyway. The water was crystal... More

Might have given it a four star rating if I wasn't so hype by all of the reviews. I've been on a month long journey of Costa Rica and Panama (2nd in three years) and had heard a lot about this beach. It didn't live up to my expectations especially given the difficulty it is to get to. Don't get... More

We stayed at the JW Marriott so this beach is close by and accessible from with the gated compound. This beach has good surfing and is less rocky then the beach at JW. JW guests also have access to the beach bar and grille at the Haciende Pinilla.

Playa avellanes is a hidden gem. Off the beaten path, with little to no one but yourself, you will have miles of beautiful sandy beach to discover. Its a safe beach to swim as there are no rocky areas and the waves start really far so you have 20 +meters to swim at no risk. Loved this discovery !! Ideal... More
