We were in Arenal in October 2009 for a few days. The volcano is still very active. I am saying still, because it is not the same as 14 years ago when we first saw it. Back then explosions would send rocks and lava spewing high into the sky. Nowadays (this can change again ofcourse) it is active in the... more

The Arenal volcano towers over the area of La Fortuna and is surrounded by this national park. There is a moderate admission fee ($6, I think). A visit here is a good way to see nature. There is one trail up the side of the volcano. I hiked till its end, but did not see any lava. You can intermittently... more

this is the best tour we have ever taken because of Mao and Roberto - they made frequent stops - anytime they saw a monkey, toucan, type of flower - so we could get out and take pictures. Mao was a great historian and talked about Costa Rica almost the entire time of the tour (14 hours) - knows his... more

My sister and I just returned from a tour to the Arenal Volcano and Baldi Hot Springs. We had a wonderful time thanks to our tour guides Charlie Soto and Juan Espinoza. We were treated like queens. The volcano is awe inspiring and the gardens at the hot springs were so beautiful. The water was varying temperatures from 93 degrees... more

This place was beautiful and rewarding. Definitely worth the money! Breath taking view, friendly locals, a few shops and restaurants nearby and did I mention beautiful? Make sure you are able to walk comfortably on various terrains. Stick to casual comfortable clothing and skip the jewelry- it can draw negative attention. more

The hike up to the volcano was very nice on a well maintained path. However, because of the way the volcano erupts you can not get close to the volcano. I would say you are at least a mile away. You can hear the volcano erupting in the background, pretty crazy. At night you could see some lava when the... more

My girlfriend and I did this tour as part of a 4 in 1 tour booked through www.arenal.net I think most people visit La Fortuna to see the volcano, so going on this tour is a no brainer. We had a guide and a group of 8 tourists and this tour took a couple of hours. We were taken to... more

you can not come to this area and not do a volcano hike. It is truly awesome. Not only did we hear the volcano, but we also saw wildlife in the forests. One such amazing bird we saw was the Montezuma Oropendolas. They were out in number. The sunset on the way back was awesome. more

To see the volcano, we went on the Volcano Hike with Sunset Tours. This is a great way to see the flora & fauna of the rainforest. Our tour started off at an observation point of the volcano, followed by a hike of approx 1.5h. We had a really good tour guide, who was very friendly, knowledgeable, and spoke pretty... more

We got a ride here with company "Cab Serrano", he spoke great English, had a scope so we saw the rocks fallling off the volcano. Knew other locals so we saw a yellow eyed viper here. He took us to the lookout and waited while we walked the trail to the 1992 lava flow. Very neat experience, also saw howler... more
