We took a public bus to the top of the volcano and paid $10 each (I think) to get into the park. We expected to find hiking trails and lots of great views of the volcano and the surrounding area, but there really isn't much to see here. We walked along a fence rail for about 20 minutes (struggling with... More

The main attraction of the province of Carthage is the Irazu volcano with its beautiful lake, which attract thousands of tourists every year, which is located in the Irazu National Park, located 30 kilometers from the city of Carthage and 54 kilometers city of San Jose. It has four craters, vegetation is virtually wasteland and little wildlife due to desert... More

It's not the "chic" volcano that everyone goes to, but it was awesome!!! And driving there yourself, passing through Cartago, driving higher and higher, viewing the beautiful panoramic landscape is breath-taking!!!! More

Spectacular volcano with a beautiful lagoon, similar to Poas volcano, but without the crowds. Its more raw nature, hostile (but in a fascinating way), abandoned... You get to the crater by walking some 10 minutes from the visitor's center, then you can walk another 15 minutes around the rim in the volcanic ash (its firm but dusty). Once there, I... More

The raw power of nature is evident in the rim of this colossal volcano, esp. when one learns that the broader scape surrounding it is a more ancient volcanic cone.It is enormous. There are unusual pastel greens and blues in the low lying vegetation that are unusual and the windblown slope of the cone is existential in character. The dust... More

Plan your trip well, earlier the better and remember to dress warm. Great view of the volcano until the clouds set in. Enjoy the views and a cup of coffee with the scenery. More

I have been to this volcano twice - both times with Tico friends. If is so important that you get an early start because the earlier you get there the better the chances of seeing the crater and the magnificent view all around it. If you get a chance to take the dirt road that goes up above the park,... More

Irazu volcan itself is great, if you go in early morning (at 8), then with good weather you can see both oceans and very nice views. We did`nt see because we did some mistakes. I hope you can avoid those. First don`t take public bus. At the moment there is only one bus (at 8 from San Jose, around 8.30... More

If you are a volcano lover, this is a must. Don't be fooled by the weather as it varies once you are at the volcano. On the day we went the weather was cloudy and rainy, however it cleared enough times during our stay that we were able to see its full glory! The place is relaxing, quiet and almost solemn.... More

If you want to feel what it may be like to walk on the moon, this is the place for you. The ground seems foreign from the volcanic ash and rock and since it is misty most of the time, that adds to the surreal feeling of being in a distant land, not of this earth. But, as it is... More
