We traveled by rental car to Proyecto Asis with no difficulties, and although the volunteering group was full we were able to do the basic tour with our daughters (12 and 14 yrs). The guide was informative and clearly cares for the animals, explaining how each rescued animal arrived there and whether or not they will be released. Our daughters... More

I was really looking forward to volunteering with the wildlife refuges at the Proyecto Asis and had called ahead to book a reservation. As soon as I call and someone picks up to say "hola," i ask "Habla Espanol?" A lady responds pretty rudely as if she didn't want to deal with someone who has difficulty with Spanish (I've taken... Hi Cpsandlin, We feel sad by the fact that you could not have the experience with the animals, but it makes me happy to see how interested you are for wildlife. I have to let you know that we have had here already several couples or families coming from Tamarindo with no problem and there have been many other people... More

Our family made the trip to Santa Clara to go to Proyecto Asis. We originally planned to do just the tour but quickly changed to the volunteer plan. My wife and two sons age 15 and 8 were so thrilled to be able to pet and feed the animals. and in the process learned a lot of the animals and... More

We had an afternoon volunteer experience and it was an amazing opportunity! My boys are 9 and 12 and were so excited to feed/interact with the peccary, kinkajou, boa constrictor, parrots, and especially the monkeys. Our guide was Carlos, and he was very knowledgeable. In fact, I would have given Proyecto Asis five-stars just from the initial tour -- but... More

It's a little hard to get to - We took a public bus from La Fortuna ($2/person) which took around an hour, and we ended up a little late for our tour. Once there we got hold/pet some animals and learn all about them. After the tour, the 'volunteer' portion started - STRONGLY recommended! We were able to feed the... More

Nick C, By public bus is really easy to arrive here since most of the drivers if not all of them know where we are located. Of course, it is really important to let them know you are coming to Proyecto Asis in Javillos. They usually drop people in front of our gate. It may delay you a little bit... More

My family went to Proyecto Asis on our first day in La Fortuna. I have 2 boys, ages 13 & 9. We showed up before the morning tour hoping to do the volunteer activity. We almost did not get to because the limit the group size and we did not have a reservation. Luckliy, one of the groups didn't show... More

Hi landfalia, We would really love to have everyone volunteering, but of course there must be a limited number for a really important reason: the animals. They might get confused or scared if there are lots of people, and since we offer the opportunity to pet them, they would really notice this. Also, we work with a limited number of... More

We chose to do this as a side trip as we were lured in by the opportunity to feed some of the animals & definitely were NOT disappointed! The center rehabilitates & releases animals into the wild. Some in our group tasted termites. Well worth the visit!

Hi GoingtoPlace123, We offer different programs, as well as half day tours. These programs usually take weeks for the volunteers, you could learn Spanish, work in the sanctuary, work in an orphanage, different opportunities like these that we offer, and live with a local family, so you can really know how is like to be a Costa Rican. We feel... More

We visited the Arenal Volcano area with things like hiking, zip lining, and whitewater rafting in mind. The highlight of the week of non-stop adventures was visiting Proyecto Asis. At the very least, you should consider the 3.5 hour tour and volunteering option. Our guide, Jose, is very passionate and knowledgeable about all of the animals. It's a great opportunity... More
