Open since 1990, The Butterfly Farm offers one of the most comprehensive butterfly tours anywhere. In the midst of countless flying butterflies, guides lead a 2-hour guided tour that delves into the science, mythology and symbolism of the butterfly. Ample opportunity for questions. Handicapped accessible. A photographer's paradise. The farm is open every day. Tours begin at 8:30, 11:00, 1:00 and 3:00. Direct bus service is available 3-times daily from San José.

We visited it on monday. Shippingday for USA. Tour is nothing special in comparison w/ other BFF's. This one is just expensive.

I visited the butterfly garden at the worst possible time- in the afternoon and just before a rainstorm, yet there were still thousands of butterflies flying around in the netted in area. Very nice butterfly garden, filled with many species of Costa Rican butterflies. We did the tour with our guide Rosa, which was excellent. From the moment you enter this exotic garden you are surrounded by butterflies of all kinds. A wonderful experience. And the staff is particularly friendly. A definite Costa Rican must-see!

Truly great people run this place! Loved it! Went through tour and spent a lot of time talking with people working there as it was a quiet day got to know them and their passion for the environment. Worth a visit.

I was excited by the description of one review that was posted on Tripadvisor. Based on the review I was expecting at least a few hundred butterflies - and at least a hundred different butterfly varieties.
What we saw was less than a hundred butterflies, and may be 10 different varieties.

We were very sorry that your experience at The Butterfly Farm did not live up to your expectations. While there are almost always in excess of a thousand free-flying, farm bred butterflies in the garden, their activity and visibility is greatly reduced in the afternoon when it’s raining, cloudy, chilly, windy or getting dark, particularly now in the rainy season....

A family member and I went to this place as per recommendation by my Mariposarium guide in Monteverde.
The place is literally littered with butterflies, like rain! the guides are knowledgeable. Since this is also the only exporter of butterflies in Costa Rica (there's 14K+ species of butterflies in Costa Rica), not only do they give you the usual tour...
