When the state legislature moved out to acquire more office space, the Capitol building (c. 1855) was completely renovated and decorated to reflect its appearance during the days of secession. Beautiful furniture, murals, and informational exhibits make this a "must see" stop on any visit to Montgomery.

It is very large and beautiful. However, they need to pay more attention to individual guests for tours instead of just groups.

Kids love to see all the US state flags and the rock plates with etched with each state's name in local material--granite, slate, marble, etc. Fun visit that can be done in an hour. Go to Chris's Hot Dogs afterwards for historical food treats!

State Capitols are State Capitols aren't they? However, if you haven't been to Alabama's, there are several landmarks and must see sites around the capitol, the First Whitehouse of the Confederacy and the Martin Luther King Church and Southern Poverty Law Center's memorital and their new bomb proof bunker building.

If you go on a self guided tour the map is very confusing. Make sure you also look at the outside too. The secuirty guard working was very nice and much nicer and helpful than the employee sitting down. Also, make sure you see every room you are allowed, which is hard to do on a self guided tour.
