Marigolds (orange & yellow), tuba roses, roses, ornate flower displays ... it's all here! Servicing the cities, the rush and push of the vendors all seems to work - somehow! The only thing I found missing, was the flower scent, especially with the tuba roses (my favourite) and roses! The place is dirty, grubby and watch where you put your... More

Fascinating in the morning. Full of colours, smells and... people. The temples and ghats nearby are also worth a detour. Plenty of surprising lanes in the neighborhood.

The tour to the flower market in Calcutta was more than an exhibition of flowers. Actually, there was none. However, we were amazed to see the toiling poor people of Calcutta undergo their daily struggle in this bustling flower market of the city, bringing in loads of Marigolds on their heads. It was a wondrous mix of flowers and their... More

We arrived here around 9.30am, it was definitely an eye opener! I was very concerned about what to expect, and was quite nervous about the experience on the drive there. I think the best time to arrive would be around 6am in the morning, whilst there were still a lot of flowers you could tell that a lot of business... More

I'm not sure why everybody has rated this so well... I guess it must have been a series of bad circumstances on my visit. First of all, the taxi driver was not willing to drive me to the bridge- which in retrospect I understand with all that traffic- which left me wandering around completely helpless and alone cause I knew... We visited in the morning, our guide walked us through the market. Initially we stopped at the River to view the Howrah Bridge and people bathing in the river. To see so many flowers in one place, the people making them into garlands, and porters carrying the baskets of highly coloured garlands on their heads was wonderful. The locals were... More

Even if you're not there to buy flowers, this is an overwhelmingly busy, beautiful, fascinating and extraordinary place. It is in its unique way a giant informal temple dedicated to flowers of every colour and shape, often made into marvellously festive garlands for ceremonial purposes. Make sure you get a guide to take you through the rabbit warren of alleys... More

Malik Ghat has stood proud over ages, with little development of infrastructural aspects. However, it still remains the best place to buy flowers at wholesale rates if you have any special or festive occasions - please make sure you're there by six o' clock in the morning though.
