We visited the Belur Math, a huge 40+ acre campus on the banks of Ma Ganga river, well maintained and clean. The Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, dedicated to His Guru Shri Ramakrishna Paramhamsa and Sarada Devi, was founded by Vishwaguru, Shri Swami Vivekananda, combining the symbols of all three major religions of Hindu, Christian and Islamic architectures. The temple... More

Though this is not really in Kolkata proper but worth the long if not arduous trip. Best time to visit is perhaps early evening when the sun isn't really blazing through the sky. Do keep in mind that you may have to stand in queues...often barefeet so be prepared if you're planning a morning/noon visit.

Very peaceful and well maintained place. You'll find calmness and serenity. Don't miss the food being served until 12 noon. Collect coupons from behind the main shrine.

The Belur Math is known for its Spiritual Stalwarts such as Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa, Sharada Devi and Swami Vivekananda, besides other monks of the order. A serene place by the river Hoogly, the surroundings are quiet despite the large number of visitors. But it is a place where you can find yourself, you can hear the sound of your soul, of your...
