Kalighat is like a locality in the city of Calcutta/Kolkata on the banks of the river Hooghly also called as Bhagirathi or Ganga. The name of Calcutta/Kolkata is said to have been derived from the word Kalighat. It is observed that the river over a period of time has moved away from the temple. Practically the temple now stands on... More

The Kali Temple in Kalighat, South Kolkata is ageless. There may not be any one coming to Kolkata who hasn't heard of this temple. But hearing is one thing and being there quite another. There is always a crowd streaming in to offer prayers to Ma Kali and then there are Pandas (not the bear variety) who will hound you... More

The one religious site no visitor would want to miss. But a repeat visit is unlikely except with the highly religious kind. The place is dirty with milling croud all around. Even at odd hours, with less croud, the place is much disorganised. This adds to the dismofiture. It probably helps the pujaris (there are too many of them) around... More

I was appalled by the brazen nature in which the priests standing right in front of the goddess demands money from everyone. It killed my devotion. How can we allow this to go scot free? It tarnishes our image as a nation and our religion.

I had a very bad experience out here. I had gone here with my wife and her family and they all are from kolkatta. they took me there as it was my first time in Kol. I loved the rustic look of the city but the feel started fading when i walked into this temple. It was dirty and people... More

Kolkata is named after Kali temple .It was known as "KALI KSHETRA" which means "ABODE OF KALI".Later it was named as Kolkata which came from root word Kali Kshetra. Visited this temple in 2005 with friends.Again visited recently in Aug 2014 with Parents. Temple is good but Priests made it a business center. One-time visit because of those priests..

I had been in Kolkata for more than 6 years and have visited this temple various times. Its a very holy temple but not maintained properly. Because of so many devotees coming it a bit dirty and the priests out there have made it business house. If you are a tourist and coming for the first time be a little... More
