We went there for the first time today hoping that this place will give us good start for the day. But coming out if the temple I was left with a feeling of anger and hatred. Anybody planning to visit Kalighat for the first time beware because you will find package dealers outside the temple who will pounce upon you... More

Very Holy place but with utter disappointment. The priests are the most criminal . So disappointing no police take any action , though its just in the area of present chief minister. Its even impossible to see the goddess as the priests cover it and only show you if you pay bribe

I a believer of the goddess maa kali i have been there many times i found it very religious. I would recommend that one should visit the temple as early as possible and, should be more careful choosing a panda(priest) there is no entering charge and some panda will make you fool easily

Our first day in Kolkatta and we had made plans to go home straight from the airport dress in the best saree and pay our obdience to the goddess. But she thought otherwise. Straight from the airport we landed at her doorsteps on Saptami day during durga pooja. Touts were telling us about the huge crowd waiting for hours in... More

Very local temple, unlike the many other bigger pretty commercialised ones. Was there on a day where there was some festival, birthday of a deity. Sacrificial rituals of goats within and around the temple. Interesting experience, albeit not for the faint-hearted/stomached. Can be assessed by the Metro plus a short walk.

Beware of the beggars, pujaris & agents who ask money for VIP darshan. Just be in the queue for darshan as the line moves quick.

Chaotic? Yes. Many people? Yes. Worth to go? Maybe. For sure you will find much more interesting temples around India, but this one is the biggest and most important one in Kolkata. As most of the temples, the market around can be interesting with all the stuff they sell or annoying with all the pressure you get as a tourist.... More

This was our first temple on our Shakti tour. Talk about being thrown into the fire! This is a very busy temple, so I strongly advise going with an Indian guide or friend. Even though we paid the extra rupees, to go the "fast" way, the line was long, but - as we were waiting, a long wall of marigold... More
