The gardens were pleasant and the grounds were clean. The banyan tree was worth going to see. It looks like a forest as you approach the area, and then you are amazed it is just one tree.

Some might criticize the botanical gardens for not being very "well-maintained", but for me, the hint if wildness is part of this place's charm: the gardens are huge, including a promenade along the banks of the Ganges (other botanical gardens I have visited, in Bangalore or Bombay or New York, do not have the advantage of a water-view), and very... Entrance fee is 100Rs. for foreigners + 20Rs. camera fee (including a mobile phone camera). The Botanical Gardens are open from 8:00-16:00 every day, and it costs between 100-200Rs. taxi fare from Kolkata one way. We went to see the Great Banyan Tree, largest in the world, and we did enjoy that part. We also enjoyed the beautifully shaded walks... More

We had visited Botanical Garden very recently. First of all there is Entry Fee of Rs 10 per person and Still Camera Rs 20. Shockingly there is Fee for Mobile Camera of Rs 20 even if the Mobile Camera is not working. However, we paid & entered to find out that it looked more like a Forest than a Botanical... More

We took a taxi reach there within half an hour as the distance is very less from Kolkata. This is a nice place for people want to enjoy greenery within the city. Once you reach there you cannot feel you are near Kolkata. There is no traffic sound, pollution and even that much rush. There are lot of spots in the... More

Picnic time with folks :)). The Great Banyan tree is still the unbeatable Heritage. Once in a group of your own, outside indecency can be ignored. Otherwise, not a decent place to hangout.

The garden badly needs to have basic infrastructure in place - route maps are not updated, trees are not labelled, sign boards damaged. don't visit on Saturday since cactus house and herbarium are closed! the official website does not mention this info. spend some time in the great Banyan tree - 4000 prop roots. there is not cafeteria inside so... This is a large green space but laid out more like a preserve than an organized botanical garden. It was a nice place to visit to get away from the city buildings, but really well documented aside from the panels for the great banyan tree.

As others have pointed out it does not compare to European botanical gardens, and in a way I am glad of that, we spent an hour or two here, it wasn't perfect, there were weeds...but hey they were different weeds than the ones we get at home so they were interesting, it was lovely to visit a space that was...
