We had heard about the Great Banyan Tree and had to witness it for real but the time and effort spent to get to and view it was an utter disappointment and sheer waste. There are no proper route markers, the one and only map is incomprehensible and there is no assistance whatsoever. Water bottles are prohibited but there is... More

If you're a nature lover like me I doubt you'd not like the gardens! It was super hot when I visited it and yes at the entrance they make a fuss about taking plastic bottles in and charge for cellphone cameras (Rs. 20 each) but once you're in, its gorgeous. I suppose the hot day ensured that it wasn't crowded... More

The tree is truly beautiful and definitely worth the trip out to the botanical gardens. The tree is over 250 years old and it is huge! A must see destination! Highly recommended! Small fee for the use of your camera.

Located on the west bank of the River Hooghly, this extensive botanical garden has some great arboreal and lakeside scenery as well as good bird watching opportunites. The main attraction is the Great Banyan Tree. It was not at all what I expected. I was looking for one giant sized tree trunk but this is a forest. It is the... More

I was so looking forward to going to the Botanic Garden but how disappointing an experience it was.It was winter so was not expecting to see much in the way of flowering plants. But was expecting to see a place well kept and clean. No such luck....the place was full of picnic plates strewn round all over the area, they say... More

A truly amazing place where Botany comes alive. So different from its Zoological counterpart on the other side of the river! However, innovative maintainance on a sustained basis would go a long way to make the garden more hospitable to the visitors.

I love the space and the banyan tree was definitely worth a visit. Unfortunately it wasn't well attended and the cactus house was closed. It was a little annoying that the entrance attendants took my closed bottled water away making the walk rather uncomfortable. But still a great spot worth visiting.

If you love nature and walking, do spend a few hours in this green heaven admist the chaotic town (Howrah). The park is reasonably well maintained and clean and opens at 8 am for regular visitors. members can enter from 5:30 am onwards though... It's less than 30 mins from Kolkata. The biggest draw is the Great Banyan Tree which... More
