Owner description: Probably the most magnificent and prominent reminder of Chennai's colonial lineage, the San Thome Church bears a colossal amount of history since A.D. 52, the year when St. Thomas traveled to India, though the Roman Catholic basilica was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world.

It seems like Thomas, the apostle, made it to South India. Pretty good going for a doubter! Does it matter whether this is his burial location; the story is inspirational anyway.

Liked the sprituality of the area but appeared commercial. However it is a good place for worship and medication with help from priests

As the story goes St Thomas came to spread the story of Christ. The impact is very strong in the Hindu state of India. It is a wonderful demonstration of how great religions can get along in harmony.

As a christian, there is no reason not going here if you visit Chennai. As there is a Tomb of St Thomas the Apostle. Honestly, I do have doubt over if this is really a tomb of St Thomas. A bit of doubting. But, you will get a comfortable feeling in the church. That is no doubt, especially in a... More

My second visit to the Basilica..this time atttended mass in the Tomb Chapel at 11am. Gives me goosebump each time I visit this place. Can't believe that I am at the tomb of an apostle of Christ...a person who lived with him, touched him.

I arrived at 9:30 for Sunday mass and was amazed that the Basilica was full, the mass was in English and the priest from Don Bosco gave an excellent homily . The singing was good. After mass I visited the tomb of St. Thomas (one of Christ's first apostles) .The tomb of St. Thomas is in a small grotto behind... More

The basilica itself is a gorgeous white church with stained glass windows. The tomb of Thomas in the building behind is free to visit and worth it for those who believe in Jesus. I had no idea before visiting Chennai that Thomas had gone to India! there is a small museum about the history of the site as well.
