Probably the most magnificent and prominent reminder of Chennai's colonial lineage, the San Thome Church bears a colossal amount of history since A.D. 52, the year when St. Thomas traveled to India, though the Roman Catholic basilica was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world.

This place shares the historic story of the life of St. Thomas the apostle. Also near by is St. Thomas mount, another great place to see.

The resting place of St. Thomas is in my estimation not to be misses. I recognize that the Church is everywhere, but in this very Hindu of places finding the catholic tradition is a nice reminder of home for this American visitor. Recommend a guided tour to help visitors navigate and communicate.

Commonly known as Santhome Church, the International Shrine of St. Thomas Basilica has an underground tomb chapel where pilgrims can pray in front of the sepulchre of St. Thomas. San Thome is built over the final resting place of St.Thomas. He is said to have lived on the St.Thomas mount and was killed there. Apart from the beautiful church, the... More

It is within the walking distance from the main chennai beach and you can easily visit this wonderful architectural building from there. You will get a description and the history of the church inside. You will feel nice inside there.

The San Thome church is something of a pilgrimage centre for Christians. I always take my christian friends from abroad here, and they are always glad to visit it. Don't forget to check out the museum and the crypt in the basement with the relic of Saint Thomas, one of the 12 apostles. Situated directly behind is a messy beach.

I am not a Catholic but that doesn't stops me from visiting the Santhome Church which is a heavenly place. I went along with my few Catholic Friends and loved the visit.

Peaceful inspite of the traffic noise. Love the serene atmosphere. Glad to have been there. One of the old churches in the City.

There are only three places in the world where a direct disciple of Jesus Christ has been laid to rest. One is in the Vatican, one is in Spain and the third is in India at Chennai. San Thome is built over the final resting place of St.Thomas. He is said to have lived on the St.Thomas mount and was... More

We visited this church last july. It was a ahort vist. This is a nice church especially because of its history, but it is not that special. From the outside it was beautiful.
