It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world. « less

Whether or not you believe St Thomas lived and died in India the church itself is well worth a visit. It is an excellent example of 19th century Gothic Revival design and is located in an interesting part of the city. In addition to the church itself there is a shrine to St Thomas and a building that holds his... More

This is the holy ground – one which contains the tomb of St. Thomas, one of the twelve Apostles (that is, closest associates) of Jesus Christ. The Basilica has been renovated beautifully in 2004 and is a must visit for people coming to Chennai. The exteriors as well as interiors give it an international look and the place is exceptionally... More

The reason this basilica is rated 5 is because of its historical significance. Of the 12 disciples Jesus had, the only one who doubted Jesus' resurrection is St.thomas. He had mentioned unless he touched the wounds with his hands he wouldn't believe Jesus rose from the dead and hence is called the doubting Thomas. This disciple came to India and... More

I was surprised to read the history about the area this church was built and to learn that Saint Thomas (AKA: Doubting Thomas) had traveled to this region and that he's buried there. The basilica is beautiful and it was interesting to see how the local culture impacts Christian/Catholic worship from a western perspective.

We spent some time in that church since it is sometimes hard to find that in India. Gothic style and took some very nice pictures from there.

Being a borderline atheist I never bothered visiting this place until recently and it was a beautiful experience. Weekday morning, after a long photo walk, I went in to get some photos. I found a beautiful piece of Chennai history history and went home with a sense of having discovered a must see place in Chennai
