It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world. « less

What I like in this sprawling complex is the peace and serenity that prevail. Like ANY CHURCH, THE CLEANLINESS is remarkable. Plenty of open space around the church for ample parking. I visit this church ( though am a Hindu) very often during my morning walks and spend a quiet time and enjoy the peace. Clenliness is next to Godliness... More

There are a few things I like about churches. You can enter wearing shoes, people prefer silence when the mass is not going on and the cleanliness. San Thome church as all these qualities and also boasts of a library and an exhibition. Overall, an excellent place to visit, even if you are not religious.

Tucked away on Beach road the church offers us a glimpse of our recent past when the Britishers were in India, the church is aesthetically built and a delight for anyone interetsed in architecture and design. A must see.

From a tourists point of view it is an architectural marvel and during Christmas & New year it is specially decorated with colourful lights and it is a feast for the eyes. It is a beautiful shrine built over the tomb of St.Peter. This was originally built by the Portuguese Traders who followed Vasco da Gama. It is designed as a basilica and decorated with stained glass. The outside of the church painted in white gives it a magnificent look. There is a small museum on the church grounds which displays old... More

Clean and well maintained church. Great historic background as it has the tomb of one of the 12 apostles of Jesus Christ. People can pray at the tomb. A museum on the church grounds explains the church background and displays relics.

Only three Christian churches are (allegedly) built on the grave of an Apostle - St. Peter's in Rome, Santiago de Compostela in Santiago, Spain (Santiago = Saint James), and San Thome in Chennai. Check out the little museum next door- well worth the visit - then walk down to the beach, find a spot to sit, and buy some peanuts... More

This is where the tomb of doubting Thomas, ( one of Jesus' 12 apostles) is located. Amazing to think that he ended up,in India. Some fragments of his bones are on display. It is a lovely cathedral, and very peaceful.
