It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world. « less

Worth it alone to see the tomb but it's also a gleaming white neo-gothic beacon by the beach. Less gaudy than St Thomas Mount.

I visited this place in the night time when it was all lit up beautifully with the white walls of the outside looking lovely in the darkness. There was a service going on inside, so you could pop in and listen to it if you wanted to. Apparently, St. Thomas the Apostle was buried here, hence the name.

This basilica is believed to be the place where St.Thomas the apostle was buried...it's mindboggling to think that a man who walked with Jesus came so far alone, 2000 yrs ago,not knowing the local languages..and lived here for 20 yrs before being martyred. the basement/crypt is a must see...ample parking available. Since you need to remove your shoes and go... More

The quiet. The sense of timelessness you get there. Makes you philosophise that although nothing is permanent--like writing on the sands a little farther ahead, and watching the wind blow over those words-- some things stay on forever

The fact that its one of the few Bascilica's in the world has not been leveraged in enhancing the grandoise.

An enormous church which totally intrigues your architectural sense if you are so inclined. If not, it makes for a lovely view and experience either way.
