Probably the most magnificent and prominent reminder of Chennai's colonial lineage, the San Thome Church bears a colossal amount of history since A.D. 52, the year when St. Thomas traveled to India, though the Roman Catholic basilica was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world.

This is a very sweet little church. There is a small museum where relics of the early christian movement in India are displayed. There are are only three churches in the world that house the tombs of an apostle, one is the Vatican, one is in Spain and the third is this humble spot in Chennai where the tomb of... More

Beautiful building, very interesting to see around. You can visit the tomb of St Thomas the Apostle. There is a small museum although we did not visit this. I would highly recommend coming here as part of the Storytrails Peacock tour, as you can combine this with some other sights in the city.

It is one of the only three cathedrals to be built above the tomb of Jesus' apostles. Very huge, has the tomb of St. Thomas. Houses a small museum.

The whole place is very welcoming, I was struck by the number of folks just dropping in to pray and spend time there.

A great pleasure and blessing to be there where Thomas came. A kind stranger (whom we approached to guide us was there to pray as it was his birthday) explained to us the history of the church and took us around.

This is a peaceful place situated in the old town of Mylapore, Chennai. It has remains of one of the Gospels, Thomas. The place is peaceful. Also worth visiting for the architecture.

This is a very old and famous church in Chennai. Even though it is more than 100 years old it is maintained very well and has gone through some renovation recently.
