It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world. « less

This is a neat stop, just to say that you saw it. Sadly, this place lacks historical evidence and it misses out on opportunities to tell the story of Thomas and Jesus. Was disappointed that they wouldn't allow photos (even when we were the only ones there). You would think they would want to make this more memorable by allowing... More

A place worth spending time in.Adice that all visitors entering the Church take off the shops/slippers. It is not compulsory but I was caught out and had to exit the main Church

Recently visited Santhome church..The church is very quiet and amazingly built. We have a large post with a flag hosted in it.Behind the church is a small museum where the paintings and bones are kept.A small tomb of santhome is also there inside wherein we have prayers everyday. There is a huge vacant place there for the meetings and other ceremony. On the... It's quite exciting to visit this church because it is one of the 3 churches in whole world built over the supposed tomb of St Thomas,an apostle of Jesus. Church has a beautiful architecture, and is maintained very well. The museum is not so attractive, however one must visit the prayer room below the church where the tomb is kept.

Although not an avid Christian I was very impressed with the cathedral and architecture within the church. The fact that it is only 1 of 3 churches that has a saints tomb within is impressive enough. The museum next door is nothing hugely attractive but worth a look and to go down to the crypt under the museum is definately... More

The Church offers peace and your prayers will get answered for sure. Pope John Paul II has visited in the early 80s. One can see the traffic in Anna salai or GST road from the hill top. There is a huge banyan tree and it's roots should get the much required water to survive all these years ! Peace and... More

I stopped off here on a tour of Chennai with a friend who lives there and we were just in time for evensong. Hearing classic hymns sung in Tamil was a real experience, I never thought Jerusalem could sound so exotic. It's also interesting how traditional Hindu objects, adapted to Christian worship are heavily featured. Well worth a visit both... More
