Probably the most magnificent and prominent reminder of Chennai's colonial lineage, the San Thome Church bears a colossal amount of history since A.D. 52, the year when St. Thomas traveled to India, though the Roman Catholic basilica was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world.

This is the very welcoming church of St Thomas the doubting Thomas, a very important saint in India who history says was killed at Mylapore (Chennai). The lance-head said to have killed St Thomas is in the museum and the cathedral/Basilica is built over the supposed site of St Thomas's tomb. The present Neo-gothic style cathedral was rebuilt in the... More

San thome church is a 3rd monuments of honour. It's a cathedral basilica. San thome church is a place for peace. The church is built very well. You get many guests visit the church from different parts of chennai. Good place to go with family to get our lords blessing.

Wouldn't recommend stopping here for more than an hour at max. It's a white painted, pristine building in the middle of a not so pristine area. But, it's nice to go and look around and get some photos. Oddly, when I was there, there was a wedding on and I was invited in to watch which was rather surreal !

This is a nice basilika and the story about Thomas the doubter and how he came to india is a good one. Compared to churches and basilikas in europe this is kind of mediocre, but I can understand why it is a very important destination since its only one of three built over relics from the 12.
