Description: Probably the most magnificent and prominent reminder of Chennai's colonial...
Probably the most magnificent and prominent reminder of Chennai's colonial lineage, the San Thome Church bears a colossal amount of history since A.D. 52, the year when St. Thomas traveled to India, though the Roman Catholic basilica was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world.

We visited this church last july. It was a ahort vist. This is a nice church especially because of its history, but it is not that special. From the outside it was beautiful.

This is one of the goos old Church and tourist attraction. This has crossed more than 180 years since it was built by Brittish people. The church is located back of beach and close to famous beach called Marina. The architecture part of the church is mind boggling. The most important aspect of the church is that it has been... I thought the cathedral was beautiful. I was surprised I was required to remove my shoes to go down into St. Thomas's tomb, I imagine it is a carry over tradition from Hindu converts, as that is required for Hindu temples. I have been to many catholic churches through out North America and Europe and this was the first time... More

Commonly known as Santhome Church, the International Shrine of St. Thomas Basilica has an underground tomb chapel where pilgrims can pray in front of the sepulchre of St. Thomas. Superstitious people believe that sand taken from the tomb has miraculous healing powers. Marco Polo the great Venetian traveller visited the tomb in 1292 and made a record of his visit... More

Come in the evening, the church is even prettier with its lights on. There's a small museum about St. Thomas and the history of the church. Don't miss the Tomb of St. Thomas.

I am not a Christian by religion. I am a Hindu. The first time, I went to this Basilica, I went as a boy, a visitor, a tourist. The strong spiritual vibrations bowled me over and I cried kneeling at the altar. I must have spent more than half an hour, looking at Mother Mary. The immense kindness enveloped me... More
