Owner description: Probably the most magnificent and prominent reminder of Chennai's colonial lineage, the San Thome Church bears a colossal amount of history since A.D. 52, the year when St. Thomas traveled to India, though the Roman Catholic basilica was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world.

The church is beautifully constructed. One glimpse and I decided to go in. It houses the tomb of St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Christ. You are supposed to leave your footwear and visit the tomb and absolute silence is expected. You can also pray at the chappel.

We visited with our family members this church as it was very much intimate to me. As Chennai is a very crowded and busy city you can get some rest and quiet at the church and in the tomb. The church is also very well maintained. Nice place to share your inner feelings with God.

The white striking building that is the Basilica at San Thome is not as ornate and grand like the cathedrals of Europe. However, that does not take anything away from this church as a place of worship. Though there is quite a bit to see and read on the walls and after paying homage at the tomb of St Thomas,... More

The National Shrine of St.Thomas Basilica is built over the tomb of Apostle St.Thomas. St.Thomas one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ came to India in A.D.52, martyred in A.D.72 and was buried here in Mylapore. There are only three basilicas built over the tomb of an apostle. St.Peter's at Rome and St.Jame's at Spain (Compestella, Santiago) are the... More

Very nicely maintained and I liked the evening mass in the tomb. Only problem was the traffic in its vicinity makes reaching there and getting away difficult.

Since I am a catholic I went here with an intention to pray, I was happy to see that at the time that I went it wasn't over populated or noisy with tourists. It was very peaceful and had a calming effect on me. The attached shop had some good souvenir to take back home for family and friends. I... More
