Probably the most magnificent and prominent reminder of Chennai's colonial lineage, the San Thome Church bears a colossal amount of history since A.D. 52, the year when St. Thomas traveled to India, though the Roman Catholic basilica was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world.

I was sitting there for a while but it is not peaceful and quiet as most of the churches. There is always loud noise coming from outside and I didn't enjoy it much. I spend some quality time reading about Apostille from the paintings on the walls

This 155 feet high church has huge significance as there are only three basilicas that are built over the tomb of St. Thomas (One of the seven Apostles of Jesus Christ, St. Thomas was buried in Mylapore) in the world. The first one is in Rome, the second in Spain and the third is in Chennai, close to the Marina... More

To see the story of St Thomas' life lived out in India was amazing. The monument is only one of 3 Roman Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world.

I had been to San Thome Basilica, Mylapore a couple of times, everytime it gives me a unique feeling. The National Shrine of St.Thomas Basilica is built over the tomb of Apostle St.Thomas one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ who came to India in A.D.52, martyred in A.D.72 and buried there. The church was designed in Neo-Gothic style... More

Santhome is famous for beach, convents, and church. The church is one of the famous land mark of mylopore. This is one of the oldest famous church. The structure is supereb and the prayer hall is very big. THERE IS AMPLE SPACE AROUND THE CHURCH. On sundays many come here for prayers. A nice place to meditate.

Although the building has been there ages, but it doesn't look like its aging. The nuns in the gift shop very helpful and courteous. The crypt was very clean and calm and peaceful. A completely different environment compared to the busy and dusty roads outside.
