Probably the most magnificent and prominent reminder of Chennai's colonial lineage, the San Thome Church bears a colossal amount of history since A.D. 52, the year when St. Thomas traveled to India, though the Roman Catholic basilica was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world.

While I'm not Catholic, this church was a great site in Chennai to visit. I learned that St. Thomas was buried there (and saw his likeness). I learned the history of My Lady of Mylapore as well.

Enjoyed visiting this beautiful church with relics of St. Thomas. The church itself and the museum were a great part of our trip.

San thome is one of the most beautiful churches in Chennai. I attend the Sunday mass (English) at 11:30 AM. Its mostly crowded during the mass expect for the daily evening mass. Best time of visit would be at 11 AM to 12 PM and evening before the mass.

Apparently, it’s only one of the three churches in the whole world that are built over the tomb of an apostle. It’s a dazzling construction, with ornate designs everywhere and that striking white facade. Visit it to be enthralled.

The historic church is white inside and out gaily decorated and an inviting break from the chaos on the streets. Also worth reading the marble wall tablets of Scots guards and important Raj personalities.

One of the three churches in the world where the church is built on the tomb of an apostle (Jesus had 12 apostles), the other two churches being in Vatican and Spain. The church itself is with a magnificient architecture and entry is a breeze with good parking facilities. The tomb of St Thomas is behind the main church in... More

You should not miss it, if you come to Chennai. A lovely standing iconic church which nearing 500 years of completion. With its presence the place is called santhome. Just a few years to the famous marina beach. The inside has its grandeur and you could see the resemblance of the churches in Europe. Remember my school days of being... More

Beautiful white architecture! There in a chapel downstairs of St.Thomas. There is also a museum attached to the church. Add to this, the existence of Bay of Bengal at walkable distance; this is one of the memorable places in Chennai.
