Owner description: We have lived in Aamchee (‘our’) Mumbai for long and know it like the back of our hand ! So we venture down small lanes to find stuff that otherwise just doesn’t get discovered. You will be in for many a surprise – plenty of amazing and varied stuff, people and activities! We, at Be The Local, work to support local full time students in pursuing higher education as well. We achieve this by simply offering them employment in our company and training them to be our ‘tour guides’. This gives the students two very distinct benefits. One is that they are able to receive sustainable income to support themselves in education and second is that it boosts their self-esteem and self-confidence, as they meet widely travelled and experienced tourists. Being The Local, we can offer you a fascinating ‘getaway’ that gives you a ringside view of the ‘madness and magic’ of MUMBAI – the living city that ‘never sleeps’!

Visiting the Daravi slums with a personal guide - a student that was born and growen up in Daravi was a great experiance. Salmam our guide was great explaing a different point of view of what we were seeing, for me it was one of my highlights in India. and it is also for a good cause - helping to... More

It should be said clearly: this is an amazing and most significant experience, a "must" for every human being, especially from the West, in Bombay. Seeing Dharavi with our brilliant guide Salim was a perfect treat shttering all the potential cliches regarding "slum" life. We were taken to a short encounter with a community that labors hard to make a... More

We wanted a full day tour of Mumbai, seeing it all in its natural state, and the TajMahal Palace hotel suggested that we use this company. What a great experience!! Our guide was Arjun Maytri, an electrical engineering student, and extremely knowledgeable about Mumbai. We started at the Gateway to India, went to the incredible fish market, the laundry, the... My family and I participated in Be the Local Dharavi Slum tour in January 2015 and it was an amazing experience and is a must-do for anyone visiting Mumbai. To be able to see life in a slum, to see the living conditions and the many industries, is an unforgettable and truly humbling experience. Our tour guide Adnand was a... More

If you want to see real Mumbai this tour is a must. Our guide (SK) was extremely knowledgable and helpful. The people that live here have the most incredible work ethic. It was an experience I'll never forget! I felt very humble to see such hard working but happy people.

Guided by a young, knowledgeable & enthusiastic student, we were educated on the living and working conditions in Dharavi, the largest slum in Mumbai. This was a remarkable eye opener & we witnessed the ingenuity & inter- supporting nature of a host of recycling enterprises, plus having the various processes explained to us. We were shown the living environment of... More

This tour was the best we have experienced in Mumbai. We were accompanied by a very kind and nice tour guide (Anil) and chauffeur (Slyvestr) with which we were perfectly safe at all times. It was fantastic to get a glimpse of the true life within a slum, we strongly recommend this tour to anyone who would like to see... More

A must do. We were late but Shaan (the boss!) managed to make us stop directly in the closest train station to Dharavi and Razak (our guide) came to meet us directly there instead of the normal meeting point. As a result we could start the tour almost without a delay. The tour around Dharavi was very enjoyable and instructive.... More

My first visit to Mumbai was greeted by my admirable and knowlegeable guide Oves, who gave me a an excellent tour of Dharavi. A look inside Dharavi tour is a distinctive and exemplary tour visitors to Mumbai should experience. Oves gave me a basic grounding in the life of some of the Dharavi residence, my perspective of Dharavi has been... More

We were in Mumbai in January this year with our two older teenage sons. We wanted to go into a slum but wanted to do so respectfully. Our guide was a tertiary student who had grown up in the slum and was working to earn money to help with his studies. This is the whole point of this tour company,... More
