So we venture down small lanes to find stuff that otherwise just doesn’t get discovered. You will be in for many a surprise – plenty of amazing and varied stuff, people and activities! We, at Be The Local, work to support local full time students in pursuing higher education as well. We achieve this by simply offering them employment in our company and training them to be our ‘tour guides’. This gives the students two very distinct benefits. One is that they are able to receive sustainable income to support themselves in education and second is that it boosts their self-esteem and self-confidence, as they meet widely travelled and experienced tourists. Being The Local, we can offer you a fascinating ‘getaway’ that gives you a ringside view of the ‘madness and magic’ of MUMBAI – the living city that ‘never sleeps’! « less

I recently spent three days in Mumbai staying at the Taj Mahal, a magical hotel but that is another story. I was on my own and asked the concierge if they could arrange a slums tour and they told me of a tour that I could take and my guide would be a student from the slums. It sounded great.... More

We saw a video on youtube of Be the Local Tours and Travels, and we thought the Dharavi tour looked really interesting. Even as Mumbai expats we had never seen Dharavi before, so we thought it was about time. When my father was visiting we brought him to Dharavi, where we met up with an amazingly talented guide at a... More

Spending a few hours touring Dharavi, with a local, is a must see. It is a unique experience in an extraordinary part of Mumbai. Hard to describe other than that missing it is missing a lot of what makes India and Mumbai unique and memorable. Just go!

Visit one of the largest slum on earth and get an insight view to one of the most astonishing recycling area in the world. The guide was friendly and a gave a lot of information concerning the recycling industry and the living conditions of the slum population. It was a great and unforgettable experience.

We visited Mumbai on March 23rd and only had 24 hours in the city. After reading the reviews on Trip Advisor about 'Be the local tours' we decided to do the 3 hour Dharavi slum tour. We were met punctually at Churchgate Station by our Guide Ahad and travelled to Dharavi on the local train. ( a 30 minute train... More

Spend a couple of hours in Dharavi with Be the Locals. The tour was great, the guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. We saw a lot of industries and thanks to the fact that the guide was a local, we were even allowed to snap a few pictures at certain places (I don’t think the other groups, with other tour... More

To me, Dharavi is the essence of India, and best represents the characteristics of emerging economy: harsh working and living conditions, nonetheless people strive for better life through their own hands. I walked by the slum with my tour guide Ahad, and when we passed through the residential area, I saw a little boy, squatting on top of a dusty... More

I had two days to experience Mumbai and I'm so happy I enlisted the guidance of "Be The Local Tours"! On Day One I took the "Life Line Tour" which was an excellent way to experience my very first day in India! We hopped trains, buses, tuk-tuks and rickshaws, covered expansive areas by foot, all of which indoctrinated me quickly... More

Firstly this tour is owned and run by guys from Dharavi Slum, so you feel that your money is going to the right place. My tour guide was Razak, who was very genuine, understanding and knowledgeable. You get to see how self sustainable the slum is through the businesses, schools, etc. and how in a lot ways it's no different... More

We had an incredible experience walking through Dharavi for 2 hours. Our BTL guide was a college student who grew up and lives there. He was very friendly, knowledgeable, and fluent in English, and walked us through the area to experience a bit of daily life in Dharavi and see the various industries there. I highly recommend the tour. It's... More
