So we venture down small lanes to find stuff that otherwise just doesn’t get discovered. You will be in for many a surprise – plenty of amazing and varied stuff, people and activities! We, at Be The Local, work to support local full time students in pursuing higher education as well. We achieve this by simply offering them employment in our company and training them to be our ‘tour guides’. This gives the students two very distinct benefits. One is that they are able to receive sustainable income to support themselves in education and second is that it boosts their self-esteem and self-confidence, as they meet widely travelled and experienced tourists. Being The Local, we can offer you a fascinating ‘getaway’ that gives you a ringside view of the ‘madness and magic’ of MUMBAI – the living city that ‘never sleeps’! « less

Everyone who visits Mumbai should do the Dharavi Slum tour. The company only employs university students who are from Dharavi itself. Hugely knowledgeable our guide showed us the vibrant and industrious community that Dharavi is. Highly recommended company.

What a great day with Be The Local it was literally as the name suggests Tauseef my guide and his driver picked me up perfectly on time in a air-conditioned car and drove me to all the main sights. Tauseefs was born and bred in Mumbai so to listen to his insights of the City was fascinating his passion and... More

One of the highlights of our visit to Mumbai was our tour of Dharavi. We were met at our hotel, by Zeeshan, one of the guides for 'Be The Local Tours' and together took the local train to Dharavi. It was a nice added touch to experience what the local train was like and we were thankful for the suggestion.... More

After spending a week staying and working at one of Mumbai's first class hotels, I decided to learn more about the Mumbai slums. I expected to be depressed by the adverse conditions of Dharavi, but instead the tour opened my eyes to the entrepreneurship of its locals. Despite living in one of the most densely packed areas in the world... More

This past month our company hosted a large a three-day international conference in Mumbai. The participants were a group of high profile architects, urban planners, economists, and representatives from politics and industry. On one day of the conference groups of participants were escorted out into Mumbai on a set of organized tours to explore different issues in the city. Amongst... More

Visiting Dharavi was the highlight of my trip to Mumbai. I totally recommend going through Meet the Local for a tour of Dharavi. Opened my eyes to how a community can thrive in adverse conditions. Our guide, Salman, was friendly, informative, open and responsive to questions. It was an incredible experience.

Me and my mom have been visiting India every year for the past 4 years but we had never actually managed to go to the slum area, Dharavi, as most tourist guides were being cagey about it. This year we were lucky enough to meet someone from Be the Local, a tourist office operated by Dharavi locals, all of them... More

This is the tour for you if you want to get beyond the dull comfort of an international could-be-anywhere hotel see and understand the lives of real 'strivers', the urban poor of Mumbai. This is the beating heart of Mumbai, working, living, sharing, aspiring to a better life. The guides are young , born and brought up in Dharavi, love... More

Unique tour taking you inside and behind-the-scenes of Dharavi. Completely safe - the people are exceptionally friendly, welcoming and curious of the visitors interested in their way of life. If you are looking for a genuine, authentic and humbling experience towards understanding local cultural and social systems - this is the tour for you.

The walking tour by 'bethelocaltoursand travels.com' was an extraordinary experience. It was led by Mujjafar and Salaman, two charming and knowledgeable university students who grew up and still live in the slum - but 'slum' is far too simple a word to describe this thriving, creative, filthy and bustling place. Our guides shared their experience of living in Dharavi, both... More
